Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed his happiness with his performance against his defensive Atletico Madrid side, as the Blues won a 1-0 Champions League victory on Tuesday.
Olivier Giroud’s second-half stunner was enough for Chelsea in Bucharest, as they would take a big advantage in their home leg of the final-16 tie.
Tuchel said the Blues speculated that their opponents could be set defensively and are happy that they managed to break through Atletico’s stodgy back line.
What did tuchel say
Speaking to BT Sport, The Chelsea boss said: “Great results, great goals. Well worth it.
“We wanted to dominate the opponents’ half, never lose concentration, not make any easy mistakes and always be aware of the quick counterattack for all our quality.
“It was a very disciplined performance – a worthy shut-out. It is the basis of hard work, a team effort – a big win.
“We knew [Atletico packing their defence] It is possible. We told people that if it happens then it is probably our quality and respect. We wanted to be brave and play in their half.
“We knew they were ready to suffer with eight people in the box. The intention was to have high intensity. We did this very well. We never let them come out for breath or countertax. We have a big reward with this result.
“This is one of the hardest challenges to open a defense like Atletico.”
Tuchel’s strong start in Chelsea continues
Since former Dortmund and PSG boss replaced Frank Lampard last month, they have won six and drawn two of Chelsea’s eight matches.
Defense has been a strong point for Tuchel, with Chelsea winning just twice in those eight matches. Only Jose Mourinho started better as Chelsea boss.
