Philadelphia – Chris Kreider scored a hat trick, but it was still not enough for the New York Rangers.
James van Rimsdyk and Shiney Gostisbeere each scored power-play goals and Claude Giroux added three assists in his return in the absence of COVID-19 to lead the Philadelphia Flyers from Range-3 on Wednesday night.
Kreider scored all three goals in front.
The Flyers’ captain, Giroux, exited two weeks after testing positive for coronovirus and missed his loss on Sunday in Tahoe, Boston. The 33-year-old Giroux played, though he did not lose a single step during his layoff and helped score goals for Eric Gustafson and Gostisbeare to give Philadelphia a 2–1 lead at first.
After a 7-3 loss to the Bruins, the Flyers countered a homecoming and dropped four of five overall to stabilize the team. Carter Hart allowed six goals on 23 shots against Boston in the first two periods and hit the back Wednesday night. Brian Elliott intercepted 24 shots for the Flyers, who started a rugged stretch of six games in nine days – including three straight games in Pittsburgh.
Giroux’s return certainly helped resolve issues in depth – and his 903rd career game linked him with Bill Nye in the regular season with the Flyers.
Philadelphia still played without Jacob Vorsack, Travis Konkany, Oskar Lindblom and Scott Laughton due to the COVID protocol, while the Rangers had the same issue with K’Andre Miller and Cao Caco.
“We would love for all of our people to be healthy and ready to go,” Rangers coach David Quinn said. “We are no different from most teams in the league. We don’t have that luxury yet. “
The Flyers received an NHL-high-seventh power-play goal of the season from Van Rimsdick, leading 3–1 in the second. Giroux hit Hess, who moved to the top shelf against Igor Shusterkin and trailed it 4–2 in the second.
Rangers posted a video of Kreider playing piano and then in his third career hat trick and hit all the right notes since December 2016.
Kreider had his first two goals in the power play and his third (eighth of the season) made it 4-3.
