City Bike Rival Dot Sue: Despite Judge May Work For Now

The privately run new bike share service may continue operating its e-bike in Manhattan, despite the city’s litigation to halt the company’s operations, ruling Thursday.

The City Department of Transportation filed a lawsuit Wednesday to prevent City Bike rival Joko from upstarting – a court accused of operating the company in defiance of city and state law, calling for a temporary moratorium on its operations.

But Manhattan Court Judge Lyle denied the city’s request for an immediate moratorium on Joko’s operations, calling back city lawyers to make their case against the company on June 16.

The founder of Joco – who is both named Johnny Cohen – rolled out the first to promise to have “hundreds” of electric bicycles at 30 docking stations on private properties in Manhattan last week.

Cohen emphasizes that keeping bikes on personal property puts them within the bounds of the law.

“Our client, Joko, is pleased that the court rejected the city’s request for a temporary ban order, paving the way for his legal bike today.
