3 Alabama professors photographed with ‘racist symbols’

The University of South Alabama has put three professors on leave after being revived by them at a Halloween party wearing costumes with “racist symbols”.

University President Tony Valdraw said the school hired a lawyer to conduct an independent investigation into the photos following a petition from students, News station Waka reported.

The pictures were taken at an on-campus Halloween party in 2014 and featured faculty members, Bob Wood, Alex Sharland and Teresa Veldi. According to the petition.

According to the outlet’s report, Wood was photoshopped in a Confederate soldier’s dress, while Sharland and Weldy were posed with a noose.

Shortly after the party these photos were posted on the business school’s Facebook page.

Although they have been removed, the photos were revived in a student petition asking professors to “wear and hold hateful racist symbols of hatred and violence towards the African-American community.”

The petition states that the casual racism portrayed by these professors cannot be unpublished.

“We are calling on the University of South Alabama to terminate these employees to demonstrate that there is no place for racism on our campus and to establish a safe place for all people receiving education here. Try it out. “

Both Wood and Sharland have issued statements apologizing for the images.

“Wood said in his statement,” Seven years ago, I hired and wore a last-minute costume for a faculty and student Halloween costume contest, on which I worked on a panel of judges. ” According to Inside Higher Ed. “I sincerely apologize and apologize for doing so, and apologize for this error in judgment.”

Sharland said it was not “intent” for her dress to be hurt or abusive.

“In retrospect I can see why someone might hurt the image, and I regret this attempt at humor that clearly failed,” said Sharland. “It was not my intention to hurt or offend, and I apologize if anyone is offended by this photo.”
