LOS ANGELES – Speculation about what is going to happen to Sam Darnold revolves every day. Will he still play with the Jets in 2021? Will he have a business? Everyone wants to know.
Meanwhile, the subject of that endless sports-radio discussion is quietly about the business around his home in Southern California.
According to close confidants, Darnold, who is three years into a jet career that has been anything but a success since he was drafted No. 3 overall in 2018, led to the same level of maturity. Handling the uncertainties of his career with who handled him. -Adverseness of the field.
Jordan Palmer is a longtime friend of Darnolds and is the founder of his offshore quarterback coach, QB Summit, a widely heralded training program that has helped develop the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Deshon Watson and Josh Allen.
Palmer, in an exclusive interview with The Post during a break from his last one-week training session in Dana Point, California, remains extremely fast on Darnold’s career.
He said, “I am as biased as I am, but I am going to keep it [bleeping] Real here: I have more confidence in Sam that he is going to reach his potential in his career than he was three years ago, ”said Palmer. He said, “How difficult his first three years have been and some of the challenges he has posed.” I’ve seen him grow a ton with the way he handled it.
“These are new circumstances for him. He was not in a team that is not winning. He has always been a very good player on a very good team. And that’s not how the first three years with the Jets rocked.
“I believe Sam is one of the most talented young quarterbacks in the league, and like all good, talented quarterbacks he has had a big offseason and has got to improve.”
Palmer praised how Darnold has finished the last two seasons, going 6–2 in the final eight games of 2019, with the team starting 1–7 and 0–2 after the start of 0–13. 1 is leaving.
“My logo is a summit, a mountain range,” Palmer said. “This is the journey. I haven’t seen a quarterback who is right – right, terrible, from bottom to top, in the end you get a championship and all the money and congratulations. What people have to do is navigate your journey.”
Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is another close confidant of Darnold, who is also trained by Palmer and still works with him. Sanchez said his interest in the Jets remains “due to Sam”.
“Sanchez told the Post,” He is my neighbor, I love the child and I want him to do well … and he is thick in it. ‘”I’m really in a place where he’s a bang-up shoulder, trying to fight off injuries, is he playing, isn’t he playing?” We have similar circumstances – two children who grew up right down the street from each other. ‘
The arch of Sanchez’s career was the exact opposite of Darnold’s date, as Sanchez found his initial success and later struggled. Sanchez hopes that Darnold’s career is his inverted version.
“We came into the league in two different teams,” said Sanchez. “Sam was drafted high, because the team was not that good a year ago. I was drafted high because they traded for me and they were 9-7 before I got there. So, I was kind of Had to go to a team that had a lot of talent and a great offensive line.
Sanchez said he was constantly “giving me some advice” for Darnold, reminding him, “Dude, I’m here for you. ”
Like Palmer, Sanchez is sure that Darnold’s best football is ahead of him, but believes that the best scenery can change. Sanchez has lived in a Jets’ world, where perceptions among fans are cemented and cannot be outlined.
However, Sanchez believes that Darnold would like to continue with the Jets, making his new debut with new coaching regimes, head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFelur.
Palmer is torn on that subject.
“Part of me wants Sam to finish what he starts and get it right, and I’d love to see a part of him change the scenery, because I’ve seen that work great for others,” Palmer said. “This league is a right-place-right-time league and a wrong-place-wrong-time league. The right man in the right position finally has a chance to be in the mix.
With Sam, it hasn’t happened yet, and it will. And I can honestly say that this year can happen with right-place-right-time jets. Or it can happen elsewhere. ”
