The U.S. women’s gymnastics team entered the 2021 Tokyo Olympics having won the last four consecutive all-around titles. Suni Lee made sure that streak stayed alive on Thursday.

Lee earned the gold medal for Team USA on Thursday morning in a tighly contested battle. Three gymnasts finished within 0.5 points of Lee’s top score (57.433), including the silver medalist, Rebeca Andrade, who finished within 0.2 points.

But after taking the lead during the third rotation on the balance beam, Lee never looked back. She executed a nearly flawless floor routine to earn the victory.

The 18-year-old Lee became the first Hmong-American to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. Her family and friends celebrated her accomplishment after her victory with some raucous “U-S-A” chants.

Lee’s family weren’t the only ones that took pride in the gymnast’s performance. Her elite, all-around effort and largely mistake-free play drew the attention of many in the sports world, especially her fellow gymnasts. Former Olympic champion Aly Raisman was among the many that congratulated Lee for her sublime performance.

Certainly, this will be a day to remember for Lee. She now has won two medals during the 2021 Olympics — gold in the all-around and silver in the team — and will have a chance to compete for more. She qualified for the uneven bars and balance beam individual medal events, so she will look to bring home two more gold medals for Team USA.
