An MMA fighter is being suspended after posting a video of himself throwing up to help cut weight before a recent bout.
Adam Piccolotti was hit with a four-to-six-month ban from the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation for a since deleted Instagram video showing him vomiting before his unanimous decision win over Georgi Karakhanyan at Bellator 274 on Saturday at Mohegan Sun, according to multiple reports. MMA Junkie was first to report the suspension.
The video, according to MMA Junkie, showed Piccolotti crawling out of a sauna and spewing onto a towel on the floor. Piccolotti also stated in the caption to the video he threw up “20-plus times through the night.”
The Mohegan Tribe deemed the 33-year-old lightweight fighter’s weight-cutting methods “unnecessarily dangerous.” Piccolotti (14-3) was also hit with a $2,500 fine. He need to be cleared by a nephrologist in order to compete again.
“I reviewed the video and determined the process was unnecessarily dangerous,” Michael Mazzulli, Director of Athletic Regulation for the Mohegan Tribe, told MMA Junkie. “We’re always concerned for fighter safety and weight cutting. Hopefully this will be a learning experience. Fortunately, he didn’t die.”
Piccolotti’s cornermen — Mauricio Calvo, Raul Castillo and Matthew Aragoni — have also been suspended for their role in the stunt. The video, according to ESPN, showed them picking Piccolotti off the floor and carrying him back onto the portable sauna.
Mazzulli told ESPN that the suspension will be upheld in the US and Canada by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports.
“I’m concerned about his kidneys,” Mazzulli told ESPN. “Something has to be done about these unnecessarily dangerous weight cuts.”
