Tom Wilson has been a cheap shot performer for his entire eight-year NHL career, but his antics hit a dangerous new low in a game against the Rangers on Monday night.
In a violent scandal in front of the goal, that Capitolas Gundon first sucker-punched Pavel Buchaniewicz as he went under the ice, grabbed Artemi Panarin by the hair and slammed the body against the ice, resulting in ten minutes. Fined. Panarin may miss the rest of the season, and many have called for Wilson to be suspended for a long time in the wake of the incident.
The Capitol’s social media team clearly did not see it that way. In a deleted tweet, the team posted a photo of Wilson following the incident, turning it into a cringe-worthy meme.
The caption reads, “Et captilis chooses: Violence.” On the other hand, it advised Wilson to remain “rent-free in the heads of others”, before calling him “the best goal scorer in the league”.
The team was sidelined from all sides, with several tweets attacking the team in the wake of the brutal hit. The backlash grew so quickly that the team eventually deleted the tweet, though before it was screenshot by many.
Wilson has already been suspended five times in his career, and is probably ranked sixth.
