VH1 is sexing up the holidays this year with a slate of “Naughty or Nice” Christmas movies that are definitely not for the kiddies.
The slate includes “The Bitch Who Stole Christmas,” starring RuPaul; “Let’s Get Merried,” in which women at a bachelorette party talk graphically about sex; and “Miracles Across 125th Street,” starring Nick Cannon (more on that later).
“We wanted to break the mold in a loud way,” Nina L. Diaz, president of content for MTV Entertainment Group, told the Los Angeles Times. “Christmas movies usually offer comfort food, which is great. But Christmas films that are disruptive, edgy and more diverse are long overdue.
“We also wanted to open doors to fresh voices and have a more inclusive slate of movies that you haven’t seen before.”
“The Bitch Who Stole Christmas” (Dec. 2 at 9 p.m.) features “a workaholic big-city fashion journalist” who’s sent to “a Christmas-obsessed small town,” according to a press release, “when she finds herself in the middle of cutthroat housewives, a high-stakes ‘Winter Ball’ competition, and a sinister plot.” As the LA Times noted, it includes double-entendres including, “If by construction you mean handling heavy pipes with my hands, then yeah, I do construction.” RuPaul is joined by co-stars including Michelle Visage and Krysta Rodriguez
.
“I’m a sucker for Christmas movies … But we’ve had enough of that regular, boring formula,” Visage told the LA Times. “This movie has the most drag queens ever, and they’re doing what they do — bringing the fun.”
“Hip Hop Family Christmas” (Dec. 6 at 9 p.m.) — starring Keri Hilson, Ne-Yo, Terrence J, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe and Serayah — revolves around a famous hip-hop family that “agrees to participate in a live Christmas television special to address negative press and soften their image.”
In “Let’s Get Merried” (Dec. 13 at 9 p.m.) — executive-produced by Eva Longoria — a “bachelorette weekend at a Christmas-themed adventure park gets all kinds of holly jolly when a hard-partying, down-on-her-luck, holiday-hater decides to get married.” Stars include Mishel Prada, Tahj Mowry, Nicole Power and Xosha Roquemore.
“Miracles Across 125th Street (Dec. 20 at 9 p.m.) features Cannon as a Harlem rapper who, after battling drug addiction, “returns to his family’s church to confront his past on Christmas Eve.” He’s joined by Lil’ Kim, Tommy Davidson, Rickey Smiley, Teyana Taylor and others.
There’s also “Adventures in Christmasing,” which premiered Monday night, in which “a highly successful and meticulous talk show host” (played by Kim Fields) finds her holiday upended “when her network persuades her to spend three days in the wild with superstar adventurer & television survivalist Finn Holt (Adrian Holmes) for a holiday television event.” Fields is an executive producer and collaborated with Rhonda Baraka on the idea for the movie.
“I enjoy the genre, but I especially enjoy pushing the envelope in the genre,” Fields told the LA Times.
