A professor at a California college has been placed on administrative leave to viral an hearing impaired student in a zoom class that went viral.
A tenure professor at Oxnard College – identified as Michael Abrams – appears frustrated trying to get the student’s attention, KTLA reported.
“Ms. Salazar, I am talking to you, Ms. Salzar,” the anatomy and physiology professor can be heard saying.
“I can hear you a little bit,” the student replies.
“Can you hear me a little bit?” Why didn’t you answer what I talked to you at that time? “Says Abram.
“I have a hard time listening,” she replies as he continues to scream.
“Why don’t we talk sometimes? Why don’t you email me? We will set up the live zoom and we are going to have some real communication at some point, ”says Abram warmly.
He said, “Maybe you can meet us with your counselor.” ”
Another student then peeks inside.
“Professor?” He is really hard of hearing. So his translator goes away in a while. She can’t answer right away, “the student says.
To which Abram retreated, “he did not pay attention. He is not trying. Are you his translator?
“No I’m not … but it’s slow on her end because she needs to translate it and then it goes through her hearing aide,” the student says.
“Ms. Salar, has your counselor spoken with me because you have too much distraction to understand what is happening,” says Abram.
The Ventura County Community College District, which oversees Oxnard, said it received hundreds of calls and emails warning about disturbing videos.
District Chancellor Greg Gillespie told KTLA, “A lot of people are quite angry, upset and saddened by what has been seen in the video.”
Abrams is placed on paid leave until an investigation is completed by the district.
Luis Sanchez, president of Oxnard College, called the video a “heartbreaker”.
“No matter what led to that conversation, there is no justification … it’s frightening to me,” he said.
District officials said they have reached out to the student to offer support, according to the news outlet.
