Canadian priest claims abuse of indigenous children is ‘fake news’

    [ad_1]

A Canadian priest has been banned by the Manitoba archdiocese from “publicly teaching” after making outrageous claims during sermons, saying that the well-documented abuse of children at residential schools is “fake news” and survivors are only saying they were abused to get money.

Father Rhéal Forest took to the pulpit on July 10 at St. Emile Roman Catholic Church in Winnipeg and, according to videos watched by the Daily Mail, told his congregation, “If they wanted extra money, from the money that was given to them, they had to lie sometimes — lie that they were abused sexually and, oop, another $50,000… So it’s kind of hard if you’re poor not to lie but all the ones I met said they liked the residential schools.”

The Canadian government apologized in Parliament in 2008 and admitted that physical and sexual abuse in the schools was rampant.

In May, the remains of 215 children, some as young as 3 years old, were found buried on the site of what was once Canada’s largest Indigenous residential school near Kamloops, British Columbia. Just one month later, 100 more graves were found on the grounds of yet another Canadian residential school. In total, more than 1,000 graves have been found.

Adding insult to outrageous injury, according to the Mail, in a sermon delivered on July 18, Forest told parishioners that he wanted to shoot church vandals, according to the Daily Mail.

‘If I had a shotgun at night and I’d see them, I’d go, “Boom!” just to scare them and if they don’t run away, I’ll shoot them,’ Forest said, laughing, the CBC reported.

St. Emile Church took down the sermon videos and the Manitoba archdiocese was notified of his comments and banned Forest from teaching.

Knicks pick up Mitchell Robinson’s contract option

    [ad_1]

As expected, the Knicks exercised the $1.8 million fourth-year team option of center Mitchell Robinson on Saturday.

Robinson, drafted in 2018 in the second round, can become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2022, but the Knicks are hopeful of signing the 23-year-old 7-footer to an extension well before that. He’s been on a team-friendly contract since being taken 36th in the draft and signing a four-year deal.

Meanwhile, the Knicks, who ended a seven-season playoff drought, waived third-string shot-blocking center Norvel Pelle after drafting Texas center Jericho Sims with the 58th pick of the second round. Sims, the 6-foot-10 athletic defensive specialist, could sign a two-way contract, which would allow him to play at least 50 games this season.

Pelle being waived likely indicates there’s a solid chance of Taj Gibson making his way back onto the roster at age 36. A source says Pelle could be re-signed in an emergency during 2021-22.

Robinson had a gravely unlucky season that included two separate major injuries – first a broken hand, then a season-ending broken foot in March. The Knicks felt Robinson’s loss the most in the first-round series versus Atlanta when Hawks center Clint Capela dominated them.

The market value on Robinson is tough to gauge since he played just 31 games this season. He averaged 8.3 points and 8.1 rebounds. He’s on his sixth agent – Thad Foucher of the Wasserman Group.

In vanilla Minecraft, there are three dimensions that players can roam: the overworld, the nether and the end.

Experienced Minecraft players have explored these dimensions time and time again. Although Minecraft is a wildly expansive game, being limited to just three realms might start to get old after a while.

Luckily, there are plenty of downloadable mods that gamers can use that add entirely new dimensions to Minecraft. Here are some of the best mods that incorporate new dimensions for Minecraft players who love to explore far and wide.

NYC Chinatown murder victim gets proper burial thanks to activist’s help

    [ad_1]

What dignity he lacked during his life on the street has been given back to a murdered homeless man in his final resting place.

The tombstone for 83-year-old Chuen Kok, one of four victims slain during a grisly Chinatown rampage in October 2019, was placed on his New Jersey grave last month thanks to a fund-raising effort by a local activist.

“I thought [sic] arrange for a nice send off,” said Karlin Chan. “Nobody wants to lay in an unmarked grave.”

Randy Santos is accused of attacking Kok and the other men with a metal bar while they slept. He first set upon four men on East Broadway, killing three and injuring the fourth. He put down the weapon and walked north to 2 Bowery where he found Kok, authorities allege.

Prosecutors said Santos went back for the metal bar, then returned to Kok and clubbed him to death.

Chan said he had seen Kok around for years but they had never spoken. He had no family and Chan feared he would lay unclaimed in the morgue.

He arranged for the Celestial Love Foundation, which helps families with funeral expenses, to pay for the interment in Princeton Memorial Park in Robbinsville, N.J. He bought Kok a suit and tie to be buried in.

The foundation would not cover the cost of the headstone, so Chan set up a GoFundMe campaign that brought in $4,392.

The stone simply gives Kok’s name, place of birth in Hong Kong and the dates he was born and died.

Two of the other homicide victims were claimed by family and the remains of the third, a Mexican national, were returned to relatives back home.

Chan recently visited Kok’s grave to see the tombstone, leave flowers and pay his final respects.

    “Mission accomplished,” he tweeted.

Olympic cameraman pans to follow roach, inspiring swarm of social media reaction

    [ad_1]

An Olympic cameraman ignited a swarm of social media reaction this week when he panned away from a women’s hockey game to follow the path of a cockroach next to the field.

The video has generated more than 8.4 million views as of Saturday afternoon.

“La Cucaracha” a Spanish-language announcer deadpans as the gruesome insect casually propelled itself along what appears to be a beam next to the artificial playing surface in Tokyo.

Argentina led Spain 1-0 at the time, and went on to win 3-0.

The unidentified cameraman has been treated like a parasite by some viewers, but most social media commentators appear to have found the humor in it.

“Guy wanted to be a national geographic cameraman but got the Olympics job instead,” quipped @athenajxnee.

  • Sayu and Yoimiya banner release date revealed

Sayu and Yoimiya banner release date revealed

    [ad_1]

Sayu and Yoimiya’s banner release date has been leaked for a long time now, but the more casual players are wondering when that will be in Genshin Impact 2.0.

August 10, 2021, is the expected release date for Yoimiya and Sayu in Genshin Impact. Other parts associated with this leak have been correct thus far, so there’s no reason to doubt it, especially when one can see when Ayaka’s banner ends in-game.

Yoimiya is the premier 5-star character, whereas Sayu is just a 4-star character.

Yoimiya is a Pyro Bow user and Sayu is an Anemo Claymore user. The latter also has an interesting Elemental Skill where she can roll around in a Sonic the Hedgehog manner.

Given that she is a 4-star user, it should be noted that Genshin Impact players will still be able to pull for her in future banners. Yoimiya will likely be exclusive to just this banner, however.

Genshin Impact 2.0: When is the release date for the Sayu and Yoimiya banner?

Yoimiya and Sayu’s release date was leaked well over a month ago, but it looks like it still holds up well. Ayaka’s banner, The Heron’s Court, did indeed start on July 21, 2021. Hence, it’s logical that Yoimiya and Sayu will be released on the date posted above, as well.

  • Biden appoints Khizr Khan, longtime Trump critic, to religious freedom board

Biden appoints Khizr Khan, longtime Trump critic, to religious freedom board

    [ad_1]

President Biden has made a none-too-subtle jab at his predecessor with an appointment to a little-known federal commission.

Biden on Friday named Khizr Khan, the activist who used his status as a Gold Star father to blister then-candidate Donald Trump at the 2016 Democratic Convention, to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

Biden said Khan was “an advocate for religious freedom as a core element of human dignity” in a statement issued by the White House — but made no mention of the attorney’s years-long history of public sparring with the former president.

In his 2016 speech in support of Hillary Clinton, Khan denounced Trump’s proposal to ban travelers from mostly-Muslim countries from entering the United States and questioned whether Trump had even read the US Constitution — as he thrust a pocket-sized copy of the document toward the cameras.

Trump, in response, accused Khan of keeping his wife, Ghazala Khan — who appeared onstage with him but did not speak — silent as part of an anti-woman dictate of Islam.

“I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention,” Trump complained in a since-deleted tweet. “Hillary voted for the Iraq war, not me!”

Javier Baez ready to embrace big Mets stage: ‘Gotta be me’

    [ad_1]

For a team that was coming off a tough loss and the news of a Jacob deGrom setback Friday night, the Mets got a welcome shot of Javier Baez on Saturday.

The club’s big trade deadline prize arrived in Queens less than 24 hours after being dealt by the Cubs and jumped right into the Mets’ playoff chase, batting cleanup and playing shortstop in his Citi Field debut against the Reds.

Wearing a bright orange Mets shirt, Baez took early batting practice Saturday afternoon to familiarize himself with his new home and was looking forward to embracing the big stage.

“It’s just the way that I play,” Baez said. “I play the same way and I’m the same guy every day. I try to bring that energy to the team, to the clubhouse. There’s not much to say, I just gotta be me, go out there and compete and play hard.

Javier Baez will bat cleanup and play shortstop in his Mets debut Saturday.

    Robert Sabo

“I know New York’s got great fans. I’ve been seeing it from the other side. Hopefully they’re really excited to have me because I’m really excited to help the team and bring my energy here.”

Baez will play predominantly shortstop until his longtime friend, Francisco Lindor, returns from his oblique injury — potentially by mid-to-late August — at which point he could move around the infield. That figures to include a heavy dose of second base, with manager Luis Rojas calling the idea of Lindor and Baez up the middle “mind-blowing.”

Whether that turns into a double-play tandem for years to come with the Mets remains to be seen. Lindor signed a 10-year extension on the eve of Opening Day, after being traded from the Indians in the offseason, but Baez is currently set to become a free agent after this season.

“We’ll see how everything goes,” Baez said of his interest in playing for the Mets beyond the next two-plus months. “I’m obviously trying to get to know the other guys and trying to be as close as I can and learn from the guys and see what happens. … I know we’re in first place and hopefully we go deep in the playoffs and see what happens next year.”

Though Baez will have to wait a few more weeks to actually play next to Lindor, his excitement was hardly tampered. The duo began playing against each other as kids in their native Puerto Rico, then again as high schoolers in Florida before eventually being picked eighth (Lindor) and ninth (Baez) in the 2011 MLB Draft. They have remained close and were in frequent contact on Friday as the trade — which also sent pitcher Trevor Williams to the Mets for prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong — went down.

“I’m super excited. I couldn’t be happier,” Lindor said. “I’m going to be playing alongside a good friend of mine, a great person, a great baseball player and somebody that’s going to help us win. … I can’t wait for him to come out here and put up a show for everybody.”

In 91 games this season for the Cubs, Baez was hitting .248 with a 108 OPS-plus, 22 home runs, 13 steals, 15 walks and a league-leading 131 strikeouts. He had also been dealing with a recent heel injury, but Rojas said Baez described it as “nagging” instead of him being injured.

Baez said leaving Chicago was emotional — especially being part of the core that was traded away this week, along with Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant — after coming up with the organization and winning a World Series in 2016. But he also said he was ready to move on and help his new team chase another championship in New York.

“Very impressed with his demeanor,” Rojas said. “All he talks about is winning, so he comes right with our mindset. We’re all very excited that he’s here.”

  • Giants’ Andrew Thomas ready to build off strong 202 finish

Giants’ Andrew Thomas ready to build off strong 202 finish

    [ad_1]

As the 2020 NFL Draft approached, there was an impressive stable of top tackles available, with seemingly every scout offering a different opinion on which one was the best.

The Giants, who owned the fourth overall selection in the draft, had the pick of the litter. They chose Andrew Thomas out of Georgia.

Conventional wisdom would indicate that means Thomas was the best tackle in that draft, since he was the first one selected. The Giants obviously thought so.

One year in, though, he wasn’t. In fact, you could make the argument that Thomas’ performance didn’t make him one of top three or four tackles chosen.

Jedrick Wills, taken 10th overall by the Browns out of Alabama, Mekhi Becton, taken 11th overall out of Louisville by the Jets, Tristan Wirfs, 12th overall out of Iowa, and Austin Jackson, 18th overall out of USC, graded out better than Thomas in their respective rookie seasons by numerous analytic websites.

That, however, doesn’t mean Thomas was a bust.

Andrew Thomas had a difficult rookie season, but that doesn't mean he's a bust.

    Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post

This is not an Ereck Flowers situation. Flowers was picked ninth overall in the 2015 draft, never fulfilled his potential, became the target of some harsh criticism and ridicule among Giants fans and media and became combative about it before the team finally waived him in the middle of the 2018 season.

To the contrary, Thomas not only improved markedly in the second half of 2020, but he has a much more mature and even-keeled personality and approach than that of Flowers.

Asked on Saturday before the Giants community-relations walk-through practice in Newark, N.J., if he has kept tabs on the progress and success of fellow tackles from his draft class, Thomas delivered the perfect answer.

“You have to run your own race,’’ he said. “You can’t really focus on what everybody else is doing. That takes away from your process and figuring out what you have to do to be a better player.’’

That attitude is everything Giants coach Joe Judge wants out of his players.

“One thing about Andrew is he’s always the same person,’’ Judge said Saturday. “He’s very, very steady. Obviously, last year as a rookie, there was definitely a learning curve, and that learning curve includes how to manage the external expectations and noise.

“I’d say, for Andrew, one thing he’s done a really good job of is buying into just focusing in on one day at a time, having a narrow focus and understanding what the goal at hand is for that day. He’s a very conscientious person, a really good teammate and a really hard worker.

“You definitely see some of the growth that he showed last year showing up. Every day he flashes several things, you say, ‘OK, that’s why this guy was such a gifted athlete growing up.’ ’’

Pro Football Focus graded Thomas as sixth among the rookie tackles from the 2020 class. Wirfs, Wills and Becton were rated as the top three, in that order.

Andrew Thomas celebrates with Daniel Jones.

Thomas allowed 57 quarterback pressures, according to PFF, which was most among all the rookie tackles and the second-most yielded by any tackle in 2020. Many of those, however, came during the first half of the season.

Thomas went through a change at position coach during the middle of the season, when Marc Colombo was replaced by Dave DeGuglielmo with six games to play.

“Last year I learned a lot being a rookie, playing in the NFL for the first time,’’ Thomas said. “I [gained] a lot of experiences that I think will help my game. As I progressed through the season, I definitely felt like I got better as the season went along and am happy for the things I learned.’’

And now, veteran Nate Solder, who was the starting left tackle before opting out of the 2020 season with COVID-19 concerns, is back with the team this year.

Asked if he felt compelled to ask Judge about his status as the starting left tackle following Solder’s return, Thomas said, “That was never a question.’’

Thomas said he spoke to Solder a few times last season, but never got to meet him until the organized team activity sessions in the spring.

“I was actually excited to have Nate back,’’ Thomas said. “Really good guy. He looks out for the younger guys. I think he’s really an asset to our offensive line.’’

Thomas has an added bonus to this season with the Giants having drafted his former Georgia teammate, edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, in April.

“It’s felt like Georgia again, going at it every day,’’ Thomas said. “I’m excited to have him here and definitely want to work and get better with him.’’
