New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday slammed the Cuomo administration on the results of the 2020 census for the cost of a congressional seat in the state – a loss that could have been avoided if only 89 more residents had been counted.

State and local officials had urged residents to participate in the once-in-a-decade national head count, so that advertisements, text messages, phone calls and even celebrities could be used.
But critics allege that the Cuomo administration dragged its feet in funding for the census outreach. The funds were not released until the summer of 2020, when the census was already underway.
“What’s bothering me is New York State obviously didn’t go that extra mile,” De Blasio said. According to the census, “they did not keep the resources, they held back the money they should have devoted”.
Finally, the empire’s “self-response rate” —the number of households participating in the census by phone, mail, or online — was slightly over 64 percent in 2010. The national rate was 67 percent.
Hizzoner attributed that response rate to Big Apple’s outreach efforts.
