COVID-19 cost Elana Meyers Taylor the chance to be a flag bearer for Team USA Friday night in the Beijing Winter Olympics’ opening ceremonies, but she will be back in time to compete in the bobsled.
The three-time Olympic medalist has been cleared for competition after getting the two required negative tests to leave isolation, she told NBC’s “Weekend TODAY.”
Meyers Taylor said she was set to move out of her isolation hotel on Saturday night for another hotel and was looking forward to getting her training fully underway before her competition begins next Sunday in the monobob.
While the 37-year-old was in isolation – she tested positive for the virus last Saturday, two days after arriving in Beijing – Meyers Taylor kept working out as best she could while friends and coaches helped from afar.
“They’ve been sending me notes on the track and doing different things like that,” Meyers Taylor said on NBC. “I also have tons and tons of video from our coaches who’ve just been doing everything they can to keep me engaged and keep me involved. So I’ve just been going over that as much as I can and watching video and doing whatever I can to stay ready.”
Meyers Taylor won a bronze medal in 2010 in Vancouver before adding silver medals in 2014 in Sochi and 2018 in Pyeongchang – all in the two-woman bobsled.
This year, Meyers Taylor will also compete in the monobob, the one-woman event that is making its Olympic debut in Beijing.
The California native said her soon-to-be 2-year-old son Nico helped keep her motivated while she was in isolation.
“I just want to show him that you can face obstacles and have challenges and overcome them and go after your goals,” she told NBC. “This Games has turned out to be one of the most challenging ones I’ve ever competed at and I just want to show him that his mother never gave up.”
