It’s finally official: The city Board of Elections on Tuesday certified Eric Adams the winner of the Democratic primary for mayor in a squeaker over Kathryn Garcia in the city’s first citywide ranked-choice voting election.
Adams, the Brooklyn borough president, received 404,513 votes or 50.4 percent to 397,316 votes or 49.6 percent for Garcia, the former city sanitation commissioner under Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Adams won by a slim 7,197 votes — or 0.8 percent — eight-tenths of a percentage point.
A margin of under 0.5 percent or half a percentage point would have triggered a lengthy and costly manual recount.
The result was expected. Garcia had already conceded the election.
The official tally mirrored the unofficial ranked-choice results the elections board released on July 6, which had Adams defeating Garcia — but his lead shrunk after the counting of absentee ballots.
Adams, a retired cop and former state senator, would become the city’s second black mayor if he wins the general election. David Dinkins, the city’s first African-American elected mayor in 1989, died last November
He is the heavy favorite as he faces off against Republican nominee and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.
Adams took note of the milestone.
“This is an historic moment for the working people of New York—and I am so proud of our campaign and what it has accomplished,” Adams said in a statement.
“Now we must build on this movement to carry our campaign forward through the general election and on to City Hall so that we can deliver for everyday New Yorkers.”
The Garcia campaign issued a statement marveling how close the first-time political candidate came to winning the nomination.
“Close is an understatement. As a first-time candidate who came into this race with no political background or name ID, Kathryn Garcia has done something remarkable,” a Garcia spokesperson said.
“We are incredibly proud of this campaign. And we congratulate Eric Adams on winning the nomination.”
