Facebook agrees to pay three news publishers in Australia

Facebook said on Friday that it had signed an agreement with three Australian news publishers in one day to enact a law for the change, requiring tech companies to pay news companies to use their content was needed.

Facebook signed a Letter of Intent with Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media. The entire deal is expected to be completed in 60 days.

“These agreements will bring a new slate of premium journalism, including some previously paid material,” the statement said.

Schwartz Media CEO Rebecca Costello said the deal would help her company continue to build independent journalism.

“It has never been more important than having a plurality of voices in the Australian press,” said Costello.

The Australian Parliament passed a so-called news media bargaining code. The final amendments, along with Facebook, were made on Thursday.

In exchange for the changes, Facebook agreed to lift a six-day-old ban on Australians, who were sharing any news on the platform. Demonetisation also affected some government sites.

Access to Australian news sites was not fully restored until Friday.
