Thirteen people were hurt — including eight firefighters — in a Harlem apartment blaze that raged for over two hours, authorities said.
The fire broke out on on the fourth floor of an apartment building at 438 East 120th St., near First Avenue, shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, officials said.
Heavy smoke and flames could be seen bursting through the windows of the six-story, 42-unit apartment building, which, according to StreetEasy, was built in 1900.
The FDNY arrived in less than four minutes and the blaze, which started in a fourth-floor apartment, “extended to the fifth and sixth floors,” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Kevin Brennan said during a briefing at the scene.
The fire went to a third alarm shortly before 10 a.m. and nearly 140 fire and EMS members responded to the scene, the FDNY said. The smoke-eaters deemed the blaze under control at 11:30 a.m.
Two civilians — whose conditions were not immediately known — were taken to Mount Sinai hospital and three others declined medical attention, the FDNY said. Eight firefighters were transported to area hospitals — including Cornell Medical Center — with minor injuries, the department said.
FDNY’s Brennan said several apartments suffered water or fire damage and the Red Cross was on scene to offer assistance. He said fire marshals would determine the case of the blaze.
