For Clint Frazier, there were many factors that made the Cubs a desirable landing spot. And as the 27-year-old right fielder said Wednesday on Barstool Sports’ “The Short Porch” podcast, one reason was close to his fiancée’s heart.
“My fiancée’s [Kaylee Gambadoro] best friend dates Nick Madrigal on the Cubs,” Frazier, who signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Cubs last month after five seasons with the Yankees, said of Chicago’s second baseman. “My fiancée went to college in Loyola in Chicago.”
Frazier, who also revealed on the podcast the mental health struggles he endured while with the Yankees, also noted that there were other personal relations that made Chicago feel like home.
“The new GM was my farm director in Cleveland, all the way from rookie ball to Triple-A, so he knew me very well,” Frazier said of Carter Hawkins, who the Cubs hired in October.
“He gave me a pat on the back and he was like, ‘You need a pat on the back, dude,’” Frazier continued. “So, you factor in those along with the potential of me getting more chances to go out there and play, the fanbase, the stadium, it’s like, ‘I’m going to Chicago.’”
Gambadoro, who announced her engagement to Frazier in July, celebrated the soon-to-be reunion with her BFF, Alisa Sandgren, via a Taylor Swift-filled TikTok.
“When your fiancé signs with a team that your best friends bf plays on and is in the city you went to college in,” Gambadoro posted in December, adding, “I’m back Chicago.”
Last week, Gamabdoro penned a goodbye message to the Yankees community, thanking the fan base for their support.
“Thank you for being so very kind and warm to me,” she wrote on her Instagram Story at the time. “I’ll forever be thankful for the support and relationships created with some of y’all.”
When spring training does get underway, assuming the MLB lockout will be over, Gambadoro already has the perfect Cubs accessory to wear to cheer on Frazier.
