It certainly doesn’t seem like Urban Meyer has a “no regrets” attitude for how his brief coaching stint in Jacksonville went down.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Outkick, Meyer was candid about his failures with the Jaguars, which culminated with him being fired just 13 games into his first season with the team after a series of controversies.
“We should have done better. I’m not ashamed to say that,” Meyer told Outkick’s Dan Dakich.
“It eats away at your soul. I tried to train myself to say it happens in the NFL.”
Meyer also said he went through depression and that it was the “worst experience I’ve had in my professional lifetime.”
It’s hard to argue that a lot of Meyer’s misfortunes were of his own doing. The longtime college coach struggled immensely in his first foray in the NFL, winning only two games before being let go after Week 14. Trevor Lawrence, the first overall pick and considered by many to be the best quarterback prospect to come out of college in years, showed little under his watch, throwing one touchdown pass in Meyer’s final six games.
And that’s just including what happened on the field. Meyer was infamously responsible for a series of off-field controversies, including after a Week 4 loss in Cincinnati where he was videotaped with a woman who was not his wife grinding on his lap. Later, he was accused of ridiculing his staff members, calling them losers and asking them to individually defend their resumes.
The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back was when ex-Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo accused Meyer of physically kicking him during practice. The coach was fired the next day, but he continued to deny those specific allegations.
“I certainly did not [kick Lambo],” Meyer said. “To kick someone? Come on. I’ve done this 37 years. Kick a player? The other players came up to me and said, ‘We saw the whole thing.’”
