Jill Biden thought she was “unsuccessful” and that something was “wrong” with her because her first marriage ended in divorce, she says in a new interview.
The first woman opened up about her first husband, Bill Stevenson, who has claimed she cheated on him during his marriage to President Joe Biden – leading to her divorce in 1975, five years after the wedding.
“I knew no one who had divorced.” I felt like it was a failure on my part. I lost my self-esteem because I kept thinking, what is wrong with me, why can’t I do this job? “She told Kelly Clarkson in Thursday’s episode. “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
The First Lady, who was interviewed in the East Room of the White House, said she “took at least a year to get back on my feet” – and then she met Joe.
“And then, unexpectedly, I met Joe. I had met him once before, but when he called me, it was like a blind date.
Biden then mentions the American Idol winner, who is going through his divorce of Brandon Blackstock.
“I look back on it now and I think, you know, if I hadn’t divorced, I would never have met. I don’t have a beautiful family anymore,” she said.
“If I were your mother, I would have told you the same. My mother always used to tell me, “Things are going to look better tomorrow.” And if you can take one day at a time, things will get better. “
Jill and Joe married in 1977, two years after their divorce.
In August, Stevenson came forward with accusations of his affair, saying he and his then-wife moved closer to Joey in 1972, working on his first campaign to represent Delaware in the US Senate.
In the same year, Zoya’s first wife Neelia and her infant daughter were killed in a car accident that left sons Bue and Hunter seriously injured.
Stevenson claimed he had a first suspicion in 1974 – when Jill allegedly had a chance to meet Bruce Springsteen in New Jersey.
“I told Jill to go with me and she said no – she had things to do, she had to take care of Joe’s children, Bue and Hunter,” Stevenson recalled. “It was a great thing to meet Springsteen. I did not know that he and Joe were sociable. “
The Biden campaign declined to comment at the time.
