John Cleese has canceled himself.
The British comedy icon, 82, announced Tuesday that he is pulling out of a planned appearance at Cambridge University after a fellow attendee was “blacklisted” by “woke” staff and students.
Cleese — who is an alumnus of Cambridge — took to Twitter, saying: “I was looking forward to talking to students at the Cambridge Union this Friday, but I hear that someone there has been blacklisted for doing an impersonation of Hitler.
“I regret that I did the same on a Monty Python show, so I am blacklisting myself before someone else does.”
The funnyman followed up with a second tweet, telling his 5.6 million followers: “I apologize to anyone at Cambridge who was hoping to talk with me, but perhaps some of you can find a venue where woke rules do not apply.”
Cleese has impersonated Hitler on both “Fawlty Towers” and “Monty Python.”
The BAFTA winner’s announcement comes after art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon was banned from speaking at the Cambridge Union event.
Graham-Dixon last week “performed a mock-Hitlerian rant” during an academic debate to “caricature Hitler and his views,” the Times reported. He has since apologized and said his intention was to highlight “the utterly evil nature of the Nazis.”
Cleese has long railed against “woke” culture, claiming political correctness stifles comedy.
Last year, the comedian blasted the BBC after it removed an episode of his 1970s sitcom “Fawlty Towers” for featuring a “racial slur.”
“They’re so cowardly and gutless and contemptible,” Cleese said of the network’s programming executives, who eventually reinstated the episode.
Cleese has also been accused of transphobia after he defended “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling during an online debate.
“Deep down, I want to be a Cambodian policewoman. Is that allowed, or am I being unrealistic?” Cleese tweeted in response to a respondent who questioned why he couldn’t “just let people be who they want to be.” He later added, “I’m afraid I’m not that interested in trans folks.”
Earlier this year, it was announced Cleese would star in a new series exploring “woke” culture, titled “John Cleese: Cancel Me.”
“I’m delighted to have a chance to find out, on camera, about all the aspects of so-called political correctness. There’s so much I really don’t understand,” he told the Irish Times.
A release date has not yet been announced.
