Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski became the third top scorer in Champions League history with his opening goal against Lazio on Tuesday.

The striker opened the scoring in just nine minutes in the first leg of the final-16 tie at Rome when he intercepted a pass from Lazio defender Mato Musacchio.

The Polish scored goalkeeper Pepe Reina and kicked the ball into the empty net as Bayern controlled the tie in the opening round.

How many Champions League goals did Lewandowski score?

This is his 72nd Champions League goal, putting him in third place with Real Madrid legend Raul.

Only Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 134 goals to his name, and Barcelona player Lionel Messi, who are 119, have scored more than Lewandowski in the competition.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is in fifth place with 69 goals.

Musiala breaks England and Germany records

Bayern led their lead 15 minutes later when Jamal Musiala brought a pass from Leon Gortzka to the edge of the box and dropped Reena down.

The 17-year-old, who joined Bayern from Chelsea’s youth academy in 2019, is the youngest English player to score in the Champions League.

Mousia also became the youngest player to score in the Champions League for a German club.

He is also the second youngest player to locate the net in the knockout round. Bozan, a former Barcelona attacker, is the record holder.

Bayern found themselves ahead by three goals at half-time when Leroy Sane countered to save Reina and a Francesco Acerbi scored, with Joaquin Correia trailing Lario by one goal, before Bayern took the first leg. Won 4–1 in Rome.
