When Lions fans came back from a commercial break Sunday, they might have been surprised to see that their team had been penalized 15 yards.
Guard Jonah Jackson was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct between the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter, The penalty moved the Lions from a first-and-10 at the Browns’ 42 to a first-and-25 at the Lions’ 43.

As Lions coach Dan Campbell explained it, the penalty was for something Jackson said to a Browns player.
“I don’t know what to tell you. It was something that is said. It was something about somebody’s mother, OK?” Campbell said. “And there was a lot of talking going on out there, but it was a penalty.”

Insulting another player’s mother seems a quintessentially Lions way to be penalized.
And the penalty turned out to be a brutal one for Detroit. The Lions had just gained 13 yards on a rush by running back D’Andre Swift to move into Cleveland territory, but they were only able to gain 10 yards after that and were forced to punt.
“It hurt. And look, [Jackson] knows it,” Campbell said. “He knew it when it came off, you know, but there was a lot of talking going on. And as a matter of fact, while I’m getting told that, I’m hearing talking, but that’s part of it.”

The punt did work out in the end for the Lions as Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield threw an interception on the next drive to give Detroit the ball back at the Cleveland 34.
But the Lions only gained 9 yards on the ensuing drive and settled for a 43-yard field goal. The Lions had just one more possession in the game — it ended in a punt — as they lost to the Browns 13-10 to fall to 0-9-1 on the season.
