Mets Francisco Alvarez learns from watching James McCain

Port ST. Lucy, Fla. – The Mets arrived in spring training with championship aspirations, but their youth are being served early in the camp.

Using a viewing and learning experience from James McCain, catcher Francisco Alvarez, the organization’s No. 2 prospect per MLB.com, is one of the top talents to take in his first big-league camp.

“We have not been able to talk much, because he is trying to learn all these new pitches,” Alvarez said through an interpreter on Sunday. “But I have learned a lot from watching him and how he prepares himself and goes about his routine.”

The 19-year-old Alvarez, who is rated the No. 48 overall prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America, said his focus is currently on improving his defense after hitting .312 with a .916 OPS in Rosie’s first pro season. Is on to do. Ball in 2019.

One of the best offensive seasons of Albert Almora Jr.’s MLB career came with Chili Davis as his hitting coach. The Mets’ new organization hopes their reunion can pay dividends this year.

Almora said, “He knows my swing, and he knows I’m making this offseason, so I’m super excited.”

Along with Davis and the Cubs in 2018, Almora hit .286 with a .701 OPS in 152 games. In 158 games from the last two seasons – Davis left for Queens – Almora hit .230 with a .636 OPS.

But the 26-year-old is known for his defensive ability, introducing Brandon Nimmo and Kevin Pilar as well as the Mets to greater depth in center field. Almora, who won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016, said he was also hopeful from a leadership standpoint.

“Curveball I was really messing with my first bullpen this winter,” said McWilliams, who was on the teams ‘radar with his performance at the Rays’ alternate venue last year. “I actually just grabbed my slider and put a little baby spike on it. I threw it a couple of times, it felt great coming out of my hand.”


The Mets added RHP JT Ginn, their 2020 second round pick who added Tommy John surgery to their Spring Training roster, last spring. … Veteran catcher Caleb Joseph, who signed a minor league contract with the Mets on Thursday, attended his first day of workouts on Sunday.
