If the Mets are on the fence about re-signing Michael Conforto, maybe the tiebreaker should be a concern over the possibility he will return to haunt them from within the NL East.
Already, the Mets have to deal with Zack Wheeler all too often. The talented right-hander received a five-year contract worth $118 million from the Phillies after the 2019 season and has blossomed into a Cy Young award contender. In eight starts against the Mets he has pitched to a 2.63 ERA and 1.006 WHIP.
It’s easy to envision the Phillies becoming suitors for Conforto, whose compact left-handed swing has been a natural fit for Citizens Bank Park over the years. Conforto owns a career .924 OPS in Philadelphia and his 15 homers there are his most in any road ballpark.
