Ex-NYPD police accused her of killing her autistic 8-year-old son and showed no emotion in a long island court room on Wednesday as prosecutors presented pictures of her boy’s shirt, socks and dirty pants.
Michael Vulva’s speculation in Suffolk County Supreme Court began when he shed tears on Tuesday, when prosecutors played a chilling 911 call in which he held the day of little Thomas Vulva’s death.
His former fiancée Angela Polina, who is also accused of second-degree murder, appeared to be wiping a tear from a tissue during a hearing before Wednesday’s hearing.
Photographs of Thomas’ clothing as a Suffolk County detail flashed on a screen in the court room. Michael Ronka was discussing the investigation into the January 2020 death of the boy.
Ronca testified that he was in the Center Moriches home when he learned from another detective that Michael Valva had taken off his son’s clothes at some point and left them in a white plastic bag in the backyard courtyard of the house.
“It was my goal to find that bag,” Ronca said in court.
Ronka found the small bag outside in the yard, among other large black bags.
“You have a children’s shirt, a pair of socks and a pair of pants,” Ronca testified. The detective stated that the pair of pants was filthy.
Michael Vallva and Polina are both accused of the murder and abuse of Thomas, who authorities said died of extreme hypothermia last year, which ended after the couple remained locked in a cold garage overnight.
Prosecutors claim they left him in an unheated garage while the outside temperature dropped to 19 degrees.
On Tuesday, Suffolk County Police Sergeant Gregory Turzer testified that Polina told him that Thomas had fallen into the driveway.
Polina also stated that Thomas had defecated and urinated himself. He later told Turzer that he had allegedly helped Michael Valva bring Thomas to a basement shower “where they can clean Thomas,” the Sergeant testified.
Meanwhile, Michael Vulva’s lawyer told reporters outside the court that police needed a warrant to search the house.
“The defense is attacking the legality of the housing search involved here,” said Valva’s attorney Anthony La Pinta.
Polina’s lawyer, Matt Tauhi, agreed and said Polina was expected to take the stand during a pre-trial hearing this week.
“When someone’s innocent, they’re not hiding anything behind and he wants to get up,” Tauhi said.
“Angela is not really there when this tragedy occurs,” Tauhi explained earlier.
