Michigan’s Juwan Howard paces back and forth with Maryland coach Mark Turgen

Michigan coach Juwan Howard put “Crazy” in the March Madness during a 79-66 win over Maryland in the Big Ten tournament on Friday.

The second-year Wolverines coach was handed a double technical and evicted, including Terrapins coach Mark Turgin, after speaking on the Maryland bench. The incident followed with 10:44 in the second half, with Michigan 57–47 at the time; Turgeon was also assessed a technical, but was allowed to remain in the game.

The video shows Howard talking in front of Maryland’s bench, allowing a Terrapin player to turn to the coach. Howard’s assistants eventually have to hold him back as he is seen talking back and forth with Turgin:

Howard, Sporting News’ 2020-21 coach, apologized after the game for losing control of his emotions. He explained the incident as trying to argue a call with a referee, at which point Turgen said, “Don’t talk to me.” He also said that Turgeon “accused” him.

Turgen also addressed the incident in the postgame, a result of events in the team’s two previous meetings. He said he discussed the issue with the Big Ten and said, if he had further issues with Michigan, he was “not going to take it the third game.” Turin also said that he told Howard, “Don’t talk to me.”

Regardless, after Howard and Turin’s former history, they likely won’t meet again in the 2020-21 season: With the top-seeded Michigan win over 8-seed Maryland in the Big-Ten tournament, the Terrapins fall out of the March Madness feud There is a possibility. The two coaches have all the authority to work out any differences they may have before meeting their team again.
