More than 50 police officers were injured and more than 250 protesters were detained after the German Police Union incited violence at traditional May Day rallies in Berlin on Sunday.
More than 20 different rallies took place in the German capital on Saturday and most of them were peaceful. However, a leftist march of 8,000 people through the city’s Neukolen and Kruisberg neighborhoods, which have often seen skirmishes over the past decades, turned violent. The protesters threw bottles and rocks at the officers, and burned garbage containers and wooden pallets on the streets.
“We have no final numbers, but of more than 50 wounded accomplices and more than 250 detained people, it is clear that we were removed peacefully on 1 May,” Stephen Kelm, of Berlin The deputy chief of police chief told the German news agency dpa.
He condemned the throwing of bottles and rocks and the burning barricades on the streets, saying, “These are clear signs that it is not about political expression but that the right to collect was misused to commit serious crimes.” “
There is currently nocturnal curfew in most parts of Germany due to the high number of coronovirus infections. But political protests and religious ceremonies have been exempted from curfew.
