New jet plan gives priority to linebackers

As part of the Post’s 2021 NFL Draft Preview, we examine what the Jets can do at each position. Wednesday: Lineback.

There is a huge need for the linebacker Jets. The situation has not taken into account whether the offensive line or cornerback has this offseason, but, after Robert Saleh switched the Jets to 4-3 after years of being a 3-4 team, they need some linebackers.

CJ Mosley is expected to return after being ruled out last season. The Jets have discussed trading with him, but it’s hard to imagine that anyone is going to seize his contract. The team also signed Jarad Davis in free agency to fill a lineback spot. This still leaves a starting place for graves and is in great need of depth.

Jeremiah Owusu-Coremoa of Notre Dame would be a good fit in Saleh’s defense, but it seems unlikely that he will make it to the 23rd-overall pick. Jamine Davis of Kentucky has moved up the media draft rankings recently and looks like she could now be a first-round pick. Zeven Collins of Tulsa is ranked 23rd or 34th in the second round.

On the second day of the draft, players like LSU’s Jabrill Cox and Ohio State’s Baron Browning are prospects. Jets GM Joe Douglas could also add linebackers late in the draft as developmental players and immediate contributors on special teams.
