OB Toppin ‘Chance’ for Slam Dunk Contest

Obi Toppin has not played major minutes for the Nucks in his rookie season, but All-Star Sunday is expected to compete in a lottery slam dunk contest in 2020.

A source confirmed that Toppin is “likely” to participate in the popular event, which has been changed to halftime of the All-Star Game due to COVID-19 restrictions this year. The NBA is yet to announce any contestants for the dunk competition, 3-point shooting competition or skills competition.

Toppin, the No. 8-overall pick in the draft out of Dayton, averaged 4.8 points and 12.1 minutes per game in 23 appearances, off the bench, in 23 appearances.

Earlier this month, the 6-foot-9 Toppin clearly indicated that he believed he had a strong chance to be part of the festivities at the March 7 showcase in Atlanta.

“Dunk competition, I think we’ll just have to wait and see,” Toppin said with a smile. “I don’t want to just give you all the answers, but hopefully I can go there. Probably not. So we’re just going to wait and see.”
