Oscar 2021: Did the Academy pay tribute to Sushant Singh Rajput, Rishi Kapoor in Irrfan Khan’s ‘In Memoriam’ segment? Here is the truth!

The most loved and touching segment of Oscar 2021 is the ‘In Memoriam’ segment. The segment pays tribute to the beloved late celebs who left us between the two award ceremonies. During the 93rd Academy Awards, the ‘In Memoriam’ section featured two Indian celebs who died in 2020 – Oscar winner Bhanu Athaiya and actor Irrfan Khan. She was featured alongside other favorite Hollywood celebs such as Chadwick Boseman, Sir Sean Connery, director Joel Schumacher, actress Clarice Leachman. However, many Indian fans were disappointed with the absence of actors Sushant Singh Rajput and Rishi Kapoor in the segment, as he too died last year. So what is the truth?

Well, the Academy may have only included Irrfan and Bhanu Athaiya in the ‘In Memoriam’ video, all the more because these two were globally recognized faces from our cinema who died last year. However, mentions of Rishi Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput can be found on the ABC Network (they broadcast the Oscars) in the Memoriam Gallery.

Not only Rishi and Sushant, even Bengali legend Saumitra Chatterjee (died November 15, 2020) and veteran actress Sasikala (died April 4, 2021) also discovered her name in the gallery.

There are other late celebs, whose names are there, but did not find a place in the video tribute, As you can see in the link here. This is probably due to the availability of space in the video, and the academy chooses faces they believe are more known to American audiences.
