Portland Police arrested two men during the 2021 MLS Cup Final between New York City FC and the Portland Timbers Saturday afternoon.
Ivan Avila Carrillo, 24, and Eduardo Ramos, 31, are charged with misdemeanors after they allegedly struck NYCFC midfielder Jesus Medina with a beer can, according to Fox 12 Oregon.
The incident occurred during the first half of NYCFC’s MLS Cup victory. As Valentín Castellanos scored NYCFC’s opening goal, the club began to celebrate near the Providence Park sideline.
Television cameras captured multiple cans thrown in the direction of the NYCFC players. Medina, struck by one of the cans, dropped to the turf to cover his face. The 24-year-old was briefly evaluated on the sideline.
The Portland Timbers announced the fans — Carrillo and Ramos — were removed from the stadium following the incident. They are also no longer permitted to enter Providence Park.
“The fan who threw the object was ejected from the game, and has been banned from Providence Park,” the Timbers said in a tweet. “There is zero tolerance for behavior of that kind.”
Both men were arrested on charges of second-degree disorderly conduct. Carrillo faces a fourth-degree attempted assault charge for allegedly striking the NYCFC player.
Carillo and Ramos were released from Portland Police custody under their own recognizance.
NYCFC defeated Portland in a penalty kick shootout for its first MLS Cup victory. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson was awarded Most Valuable Player honors.
