WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns is unapologetically unscripted.
The pro wrestler shocked fans last month when he dropped a sex joke on “Smackdown” and compared WWE legend John Cena to the “missionary position” during a promo segment for their Aug. 21 SummerSlam showdown.
Although the WWE cut the joke in replays, Reigns has no regrets about his bold remark.
“There’s a portion of my career where I’d either read a script or I’d try to adjust a script as much as possible, but for a while now, especially since I came back from my little leave at the beginning of the pandemic, since ‘SummerSlam,’ I’m not scripted,” Reigns said on the SI Media Podcast.
“I say what I want to. I say what I feel. If it comes out of my mouth, it’s my verbiage. I come up with it. I deliver it. And that’s why it’s been the way it’s been, because it’s mine.”
Reigns also joked, “Let’s throw a little respect on missionary. I think we can all agree that any position is a good position.”
Reigns has made a brilliant and well-received heel turn since his return to the ring. Reigns, who is in remission from leukemia, stepped away from the ring at the start of the COVID pandemic.
“I think it did raise some eyebrows, but I don’t get in trouble,” Reigns said of WWE’s reaction to the ‘missionary’ comment. “The gimmick is as close to being real as possible. Even if they tried to say something to me, I wouldn’t have cared anyway.
“What are they gonna do? Not have me on ‘SmackDown’ next week? Like I did before SummerSlam during last summer, I’ll go home. It doesn’t matter to me. Let’s see how it goes without me.”
In late July, Reigns took the ring at “Smackdown” to deliver Cena a few insults — after the two came face-to-face at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view event in Fort Worth, Texas.
“He came out here [with] the same music, the same entrance, the same run to the ring, the same outfit, the same promo, the same insults. If I wanted that all I had to do was search online for 2005 John Cena same thing over and over and over. It’s like missionary position every single night,” Reigns said as the crowd roared.
