And so the Russell Wilson story takes another turn.
The embattled quarterback will stay in Seattle, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, who reports the Seahawks have no plans to trade him despite a year’s worth of rumors and uncertainty. It’s coach Pete Carroll’s future that is cloudy, per Garafolo, after his first losing season in a decade.
Wilson has been linked to a number of teams, including the Giants, as issues with the Seahawks have grown. Though he submitted a list of four teams for which he would waive his no-trade clause last offseason, he’s been publicly diplomatic and positive about a future in Seattle during the season.
“I know for me personally, I hope it’s not my last game [in Seattle],” Wilson told reporters earlier this week.
That could be disappointing to the Giants, who need to decide whether to stick with Daniel Jones after a lackluster 2021.
If Carroll is on his way out, it could be costly. He’s owed nearly $50 million on his contract, per Garafolo, which runs through 2025. Seattle’s front office is supposed to meet with chairwoman Jody Allen during the upcoming week, as per usual after the season, according to the report. A change would only happen if Carroll and the front office aren’t on the same page in terms of how the Seahawks future plans, Garafolo reports.
The Seahawks have suffered a disappointing year, failing to return to the playoffs and going into the last day of the season at 6-10 ahead of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. The Wilson/Carroll era, which has produced a championship and consistent playoff appearances, may be moving toward its end.
For a long time, it looked like Wilson would be the one on the way out. But perhaps that’s changed.
