Russell Wilson took the first step in his eventual return to the field, but it doesn’t seem that his coach knew about it.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters Monday he didn’t know when Wilson would be back or when the surgical pin in Wilson’s finger would be removed. The pin, which was inserted into his finger to repair a torn tendon and dislocation, had to come out before Wilson could bend the middle finger on his throwing hand.
“That’s part of the process that’s been coming,” Carroll said, per the News Tribune. “It’s how he works after that’s out and how he starts developing. It’s more that.”
Hours after Carroll spoke, Wilson tweeted a photo of the removed pin with the caption: “No more pin. Time to Win.”
With the Seahawks on their bye this week, that would seem to set up Wilson to potentially play the next game at Green Bay on Nov. 14. Wilson reportedly needs a couple of days to heal after the pin is out before returning to practice.
“There’s a pretty clear-cut time frame,” Carroll said. “They think that it’s going to take a couple days after that is removed, and then it’s just how he can progress. It will be the first time he can bend his finger, you know. So we’ve got to see how that works out.”
This offseason featured trade speculation surrounding Wilson that centered on his relationship with Carroll. Wilson had a list of teams he wanted to go to, but never formally requested a trade.
“I think me and coach Carroll’s relationship is stronger than ever,” Wilson said on the “Dan Patrick Show” before the season. “And I think that’s the best part about it. And also my teammates. We’re pumped about the season.”
Wilson last played in a 26-17 loss to the Rams in Week 5. The Seahawks have gone 1-2 in his absence with Geno Smith at quarterback.
“Really, we are just kind of hoping for the best in terms of his return, that everything is handled well as we get him in mode where he starts to use his hand and his finger with the football and all that,” Carroll said.
