No one knew that college basketball was on the verge of changing forever. Not even the catalyst of the revolution, tinkering with statistics and mathematical formulas during his downtime from writing a thesis on atmospheric science.

Ken Pomeroy didn’t aspire to become one of the most influential people in the sport, playing a role on virtually every team in the country. He couldn’t know how many coaches would become reliant on the advanced statistics system featured on his website (kenpom.com

). He couldn’t fathom becoming the godfather of a movement, changing how teams prepare, altering media coverage and influencing sportsbooks.

Pomeroy, 48, was simply a college basketball fan with no connection to the sport outside rooting interests for his alma maters (Virginia Tech, Wyoming). He’d been enamored with mathematics since he was a child. By creating proprietary algorithms to more accurately evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of every Division I team, Pomeroy found an absorbing and fulfilling hobby to keep him occupied when he wasn’t busy working as a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

Former Indiana University basketball Maurice “Mo” Creek “finally” made his way out of Ukraine.

Creek, stranded in Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, announced the conclusion of his harrowing ordeal Monday night en route to Romania.

“Took me 12 hours, but finally out of Ukraine,” Creek said. “Next stop back to Romania.”

The former Hoosier detailed his entire experience on social media, where he revealed he was stuck in the city of Mykolaiv, Ukraine last Thursday. Mykolaiv is located in southern Ukraine, roughly 298 miles from Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

He was set to depart the country two days later. Air sirens, however, delayed Creek’s escape effort.

Creek was trapped in Ukraine, where he plays professional basketball for MBC Mykolaiv of the Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague. According to ABC 7 News, the 31-year-old wasn’t paid and couldn’t travel out of the country.

“I’m terrified, I’m terrified,” Creek told the outlet. “I’m not just saying that because I’m in it, I’m saying it because it’s real.

A GoFundMe page, created by Creek’s family, raised over $3,000 in two days as of Tuesday morning.

Former Indiana Hoosier basketball player Maurice Creek remains trapped in Ukraine.

Creek, a current Ukrainian SuperLeague player, posted on Twitter Sunday that he “never felt so hopeless” in his life.

Creek was initially supposed to leave Ukraine on Saturday but “sirens” went off, he said in a tweet. It’s still unclear when he’ll be able to leave the war-torn country.

Fans who have been following the 31-year-old player’s saga on social media offered their support.

One of Creek’s former basketball coaches at George Washington University, Mike Lonergan, tweeted his support: “We are praying for you Mo. Keep the faith.”

The shooting guard is an international veteran and has played across the world in places such as the Netherlands and Denmark.

After a one-season stint with Kyiv-Basket in 2018, Creek returned to Ukraine in 2019 and hasn’t left since.
