Max Scherzer has started just about every kind of high-profile game imaginable, so the chances he will be fazed by his Subway Series debut Wednesday night are roughly zero percent.
“It brings a sense of relief to have that kind of caliber of player in your locker room and healthy and out on the field and pitching for us,” J.D. Davis said Tuesday before the Mets faced the Yankees at Citi Field.
In Jacob deGrom’s absence, Scherzer has carried the “ace” title in the Mets’ rotation and pitched about as well as the team could have hoped for after he arrived last offseason on a three-year contract worth $130 million.
In 12 starts this season, Scherzer is 6-2 with a 2.28 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 75 innings. He also owns a 0.893 WHIP, having allowed just 54 hits and 13 walks.
In four starts since returning from an oblique strain that sidelined him for nearly seven weeks, Scherzer has been even better, pitching to a 1.78 ERA with 39 strikeouts and two walks in 25 ¹/₃ innings.
Get all the latest live and local coverage from the New York Post as the Yankees and Mets face off for Game 1 of the 2022 Subway Series.
“He’s been a lot of the same guy I remember facing,” Brandon Nimmo said. “He attacks hitters and has great preparation leading into his starts and knows exactly the plan that he has and what he wants to execute when he goes out there, so that is one of the differences: he goes out and executes it and hits his spots and doesn’t make many mistakes. When you have good stuff and execute your pitches, it makes it really hard to hit him.”
The Mets ideally would have had deGrom and Scherzer for the Subway Series. But deGrom, who is rehabbing from a stress reaction on his right scapula, had a simulated game pushed back two days last week because of muscle soreness in his shoulder. After deGrom threw his simulated game, a decision was reached to give him an additional rehab start.
But the Mets got the next-best thing with Taijuan Walker and Scherzer aligned for the Yankees. Walker took the ball for Tuesday’s series opener.
“We know they are a real good team and we want to have good guns firing for it,” Nimmo said. “But with Jake coming back now, we are going to have a pretty dang good starting staff. We are confident with whoever goes out there, but it’s great to have Taijuan and Scherzer going out there against them.”
Nimmo recalled the euphoria of thinking deGrom and Scherzer might pitch together all season in the rotation. That plan was amended after just two appearances by deGrom in spring training, after which he was diagnosed with the stress reaction. The Mets later lost deGrom’s replacement, Tylor Megill, to two IL stints. Megill remains sidelined.
“We were planning on pretty much having two aces and then Megill was doing his thing and it was great,” Nimmo said. “But when [Megill and Scherzer] went down it left a little bit of a gap, and I felt like our pitchers — especially like Carlos [Carrasco] and Taijuan — they had great starts and filled that gap well. But when Max comes back, it kind of gives you that solid ace feel of, ‘He’s going out on the mound, we’re definitely going to have a chance tonight. He is going to give us a chance for seven innings.’ ”
Scherzer is 4-4 with a 3.93 ERA lifetime in nine starts against the Yankees. Most of those starts came when Scherzer was still pitching in the AL with the Tigers.
“The situations he’s been through, he will not be fazed by [the Subway Series], and he could be telling the next batter to, ‘Get in the effing box’ or something like that,” Davis said. “We are going to get the tenacity of Scherzer, so I don’t think he’s going to be fazed by it at all.”
Khloé Kardashian’s daughter is only 3 years old, but she might be her famous family’s next makeup mogul.
Kardashian, 37, posted a snap on Instagram Tuesday of True Thompson — whom she shares with Tristan Thompson — wearing a full face of glam.
It looks like True raided her mother’s beauty bag, as she slicked on glittering lavender eyeshadow, bright red lipstick and blush.
The Good American founder’s daughter managed to impress Kardashian makeup artist Mary Phillips, who asked, “Can true do my make up [sic] later?!”
“Good thing Kanye isn’t the dad, he’d be trippin,” a fan joked in the comments, referencing how the rapper famously banned his eldest daughter, North West, from dabbling with cosmetics.
“She loves makeup but her dad won’t let her wear it,” the musician’s estranged wife, Kim Kardashian, told E! News
in 2019, adding that she “got in trouble” for allowing North access to beauty products.
“I think he had it; he changed all the rules. I’d let her wear, you know, she has a little red for Christmas, I’d let her wear a red lip, or I’d let her do one pop of something. I’d let her, if she’s wearing a black dress, a black lip.”
The Kardashian-Jenners clearly disagree with West’s stance, with both Kris and Kylie Jenner dropping approving emojis in the comments of Khloé’s post.
“Watch out Aunt Kylie,” one fan joked of True’s makeup mastery, while another requested a “Kylie x True collab” from the younger Jenner sister’s cosmetics line.
Warhammer 40,000’s infamous space dwarves, originally known as Squats, are returning to the miniatures wargame as a new faction called the Leagues of Votann. The announcement, officially made on Saturday by publisher Games Workshop, was preceded by a video trailer on April Fools’ day which many took for a gag. Fans should expect a new line of models and rules later this year.
The Squats have a long and storied history in the 40K pantheon that goes all the way back to the first edition of the game, where they were cast as a burly, pangalactic biker gang. But eventually they were dropped from the franchise, and much of their history scrubbed from its deep lore. The Fandom community wiki makes note of an obscure forum post from 2004 that seems to indicate why.
Perhaps the most iconic art of the original Squat Faction is this line drawing by Paul Bonner first published in White Dwarf #111 in 1989. The original sold for £950.00.
“The reason that the Squats were dropped,” writes former Games Workshop designer Jervis Johnson, “was because the creatives in the Studio […] felt that we had failed to do the Dwarf ‘archetype’ justice in its 40K incarnation. From the name of the race (Squats – what *were* we thinking?!?!) through to the short bikers motif, we had managed to turn what was a proud and noble race in Warhammer and the other literary forms where the archetype exists, into a joke race in 40K. We only fully realised what we had done when we were working on the 2nd edition of 40K.”
For more than a decade, fans of Squats made do by fielding armies of space dwarf models that played legally under the rules of different factions. Then, in 2018, Games Workshop reintroduced the race to the canonical lore with a single miniature for Necromunda, a small scale skirmish game. Few expected much more than that.
The new Squat army harkens back to the original lore of the dwarven race as first introduced, but drops the bikes, chains, and leather. In its place is a diminutive, futuristic warrior clad in pale armor and holding what looks to be a potent little plasma weapon.
From the Games Workshop announcement post:
Although their civilisation shares common roots with Humanity, the Leagues of Votann have an uneasy relationship with the Imperium of Man. Unlike their superstitious Human cousins, the Leagues emerged from the Age of Strife with far more of their ancient technology intact, including some infamous advances the Imperium would consider extremely heretical.
Their knack for science and a headstrong nature make for skilled warriors backed up by reliable weaponry, as you can see from even this basic trooper. And while there’s no love lost between the Leagues of Votann and Humankind, the resurgence of Chaos and ascendent xenos hordes mean there are usually more pressing concerns than fighting each other.
Overall, we’re not sure what to expect from this incarnation of the Squats. Perhaps the faction will be a glass cannon, with expensive but powerful weapons more in line with the T’au faction than the Space Marines. Perhaps they’ll be more mechanized, with a mix of flyers and ground units. I have a hunch that they’ll be a hybrid force, one capable of being fielded in multiple formats like Kill Teamand Necromunda as well as the full fat 40K wargame. Expect more information to come out over the next several months.
Twenty Five Twenty One has come to an end last weekend. We are pretty sure the fans are feeling a deep void in their watching schedule now. TFTO has been a rollercoaster of emotions not just for the characters but for the fans as well. We do have grouse against the writer and the director with the way they ended the show without explaining some really burning questions. We always knew Baek Yi-jin (Nam Joo-hyuk) and Na Hee-do (Kim Tae-ri) won’t be the endgame but the way it was handled seemed quite haphazard. In case anybody hasn’t watched the finale, we aren’t going to delve on it more. In fact, we would like to hype Na Hee-do and how she is mature beyond her screen age. Bae Suzy in My Love From Another Star, Kim Jun-ho in Twenty Five Twenty One – 5 Celeb KDrama Cameos Who Exist to Make The Leads Jealous!.
Kim Tae-ri played the role of Na Hee-do so sincerely that at times you will feel it’s not the teenager Hee-do talking but the 30-year old Tae-ri. The way she handles certain key situations in her life without breaking down is simply amazing. But the most important is the way she handled her relationship with Baek Yi-jin, the man who’s issues in life gets the better of him every time. Here are five reasons why if given a choice, follow Na Hee-do rather than Baek Yi-jin.
1. No Damsel In Distress
Nobody understands the fatigued damsel in distress trope better than Indians fed on commercial movies. So whenever we see a character like Na Hee-do, it makes us believe that is not a norm but an aberration. She loses out on her place in the national team as a fencer due to the economic crisis but she didn’t give up hope. She even continued to work hard and won a gold medal.
2. Understanding what relationship truly means
Baek Yi-jin always seemed conflicted about everything from how to deal with the mishaps in his life to the demands of his job. Na Hee-do always understood him and gave him space to make sense of his surroundings. Yet Yi-jin confronts her for not getting his point. She even says one can’t share just happiness in a relationship but sorrows too. She evens suggests him to seek therapy since he moving to the US as that country is more accepting towards it.
“That’s why we are breaking up. We’re lovers only during the good times and a burden to each other in the bad times.” ?
In one of the episodes, Baek Yi-jin breaks down in the tunnel when his reporting on Yu-rim turns her into a traitor. Yu-rim is best friends with Hee-do and is also close to Baek Yi-jin. He feels guilty and even cribs how his job might put Hee-do at the receiving end as well. Hee-do confronts and then comforts him saying that’s his job.
Baek Yi-jin was cagey about his relationship with Hee-do and she understood that. When he was busy covering several stories, she didn’t push him for meetups and even argued with anyone who tried to gaslight her against him. Having dealt with a similar environment with her mother, she approached her relationship differently, like a mature individual. Here’s How the Korean Drama Crash Landing On You Borrowed This Great Line From Irrfan Khan’s The Lunchbox.
5. No self-loathing
Na Hee-do gives you a sense of dignity and completion. She didn’t wallow in self pity when the relationship ended, she didn’t let it ruin her career or life. She moved on to more glories as a fencer and got married too. Yes, her love for Baek Yi-jin will always remain, she never let it govern her decisions.
We have a feeling this might piss off a lot of Baek Yi-jin fans and we agree he was fighting his own demons. But we also think he will agree with us as well. You remember what he does after reading Na Hee-do’s letter right? That says it all!

Traeger is one of the biggest names in backyard grilling. The company’s line of pellet grills offers WiFi connectivity and other handy features across the board starting at $900. After churning out new smart models in both 2018 and 2019, the company hasn’t debuted a new grill in about three years. Instead, it focused on redesigning its app to include recipe guidance and video tips along with an Apple Watch version and recently introduced Traeger Provisions meal (read: feast) kit service. For grilling season 2022, though, Traeger has completely redesigned its premium model, the Timberline.
And a lot of those upgrades relate to the tech. First, Traeger touts “an entirely new level of performance” thanks to a new smart combustion system. With added sensors, the grill monitors the cooking area to prevent pesky flare-ups for consistent results. The company has also swapped out the old black and white display for a full-color touchscreen unit. Not only does it offer a more modern look, but the screen can show a guided setup in addition to monitoring time and temperature. What’s more, Traeger has built in a maintenance check where the grill can self-diagnose issues and guide you to customer service or replacement parts via a unique QR code.
You won’t have to worry about the Timberline pulling cooking power for that display either. Traeger says dual controllers handle the cooking and the screen separately, and the display has its own dedicated graphics processor. The new controller automatically detects Meater’s wireless food probes and the new Timberline comes with two of those accessories (you can use up to four at a time). In case you missed it, Traeger acquired Meater last summer, so this integration was inevitable. The only caveat is you have to use the probes designed for the new Timberline grills. Previous versions from Meater aren’t the same so they won’t work here. If you prefer wired probes, you can still use those on these new models.
To help with sauces, frying, searing and other tasks, the new Timberline grills have a side burner. Sure, a lot of grills have that extra burner, but they’re not common on pellet models. More specifically, Traeger says this Timberline features the first outdoor-rated induction burner for both precision and power. It should especially be handy for fans of the reverse sear as it will heat up much faster than trying to get the entire grill up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit or higher after a quick smoke.
Plenty of grills offer lighting to help you see at night, with Weber being one of the biggest names to do so. Until now, Traeger hadn’t included built-in illumination, but the new Timberline has it. The company’s vice president of product Michael Colston explained that Traeger spent a lot of time researching where the best location for the lights should be so that smoke doesn’t interfere with visibility. Instead of putting lights inside the smoke chamber, it positioned them on the outside, so it can be activated by a lid sensor and it won’t get smoked up while lighting the entire cooking surface.
“We’ve thought about where that light needs to be placed,” he told Reporter Door. “It also signals to the controller that the door is open and barely keeps the smoke going.” So when the lid is up, the grill is no longer working to produce the same level of smoke as when it’s closed. It’s also not trying to recover from the drop in ambient temperature before you’re ready for it to do so.
Inside, a new grease and ash collection system sends all of the waste out of the bottom instead of rolling grease to a small pan on the side. Colston described the Timberline as “nearly self-cleaning” since a new FreeFlow firepot ejects the ash over to what Traeger calls the EZ-Clean Grease & Ash Keg. New plates channel grease to the same receptacle where gravity carries over wood pellet ash and debris. Besides putting all the waste in one spot, this new setup also means you won’t have to break out the shop vac as frequently to clean up. Colston explained he’s been using a new Timberline for months and probably could’ve gone longer without vacuuming out the inside. If the description is accurate, this will alleviate a key headache with pellet grills.
Instead of a four-post support for the new Timberline, Traeger opted for a cart stand like you typically see with gas grills. This offers more storage via a cabinet and small shelves below the pellet hopper. The company also designed what it calls the Pop-And-Lock (P.A.L.) rail system for accessories — things like an adjustable roll holder (paper towels, foil or butcher paper), tool hooks and a basket for rubs/sauces. The rails wrap around the front and sides of the grill, but not the back, so you have some room to move things as needed. Traeger relocated the pellet hopper cleanout chute to right below the hopper, so it’s accessible from the front. The cart was designed so you can easily slide in a storage container and empty pellets between cooks. So not only are you able to keep your fuel fresh, but you might also be more likely to use different types of wood instead of sticking to your go-to variety (read: buy more pellets).
The new Timberline should also offer more consistent performance in chilly weather thanks to full stainless steel insulation and a multi-level heat delivery system that wraps the cooking area in radiant warmth. Traeger says all of this creates hotter temperatures at the grates for better searing and improved overall heat regulation.
Traeger designed the new Timberline so it can be installed in an outdoor kitchen’s countertop setup. A trim kit can be purchased for a finished look and you can install the induction side burner off to the side of the grill as well. Lots of Traeger users have built outdoor setups with counters and bigger carts by removing the legs that come with the grills, so the company is catering to those folks by designing its latest model so that this process is relatively easy.
Even if you don’t want a full kitchen on your patio, the company has more accessories to add other culinary capabilities to the Timberline. With ModiFire products, you can purchase a stainless steel fish/veggie tray or a griddle for the induction cook top. The company says a two-sided griddle for use inside the grill is coming this fall alongside pizza stone and cover system that has its own sensors and cooking algorithm.
Despite all of the new stuff, some old favorites are still here. The Timberline is still powered by Traeger’s D2 platform and WiFire wireless connectivity. The company’s app still provides step-by-step guidance, video tutorials and a wealth of recipes, in addition to giving you control over every grill setting except for pressing the ignite button to get things going. And yes, you can use it to control that new side burner with the app too. The company has swapped out the WiFi antenna for a 360-degree component is says is more powerful that what was on previous models. Super Smoke mode is also back for low-and-slow cooking, but Traeger says it’s capable of even more flavor with that new firepot that can churn out more smoke.
The new Timberline and the larger Timberline XL will sit at the pinnacle of Traeger’s product lineup. Both models will be available this spring for $3,499 and $3,799, respectively. For comparison, the previous-gen Timberline 850 and 1300 are $2,100 and $2,300, so you’ll have to pay quite the premium for all of the upgrades the company has added to it’s high-end models.

“We don’t even have to talk about the fact that I’m not allowed back in that hotel.”
Taika Waititi had the audience cracking up at the 59th Annual ICG Publicists Awards on Friday night as he made fun of all their hard work trying to take care of his fellow Hollywood elites, whom he described as “very annoying” and “immature idiots.”
The “Thor” and “Jojo Rabbit” director was on hand to accept the Television Showpersons of the Year award for his Indigenous FX on Hulu series “Reservation Dogs,” alongside co-creator Sterlin Harjo.

Things started off pretty straight, as Waititi spoke about the significance of their series, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We wanted to make a Native show that exemplified the authentic humorous stories we have shared throughout our nearly 20 years of friendship,” Waititi said, referring to Harjo.
“We wanted to bring these Indigenous stories to the forefront to see people that looked like us on screen, but you can’t just write and shoot a show and then call it a day. We need people who will work hard to make sure our work reaches a wider audience, and that is where people like you come in.”
From there, though, Waititi went off the rails a bit, fully acknowledging that publicists do far more than just help publicize their clients’ latest projects. Remember that time I was… Ah, we don’t have to talk about that. We don’t have to talk about the fact that I’m not allowed back in that hotel,” he joked, without offering any specifics.
The Oscar-winner was forced to endure two weeks in quarantine with his young daughters in New Zealand, sharing that his daughters certainly made a mess of the room on Instagram. But he courted far more headlines in July 2021 when he was caught on a hotel balcony by The Daily Mail getting very cozy with both girlfriend Rita Ora and Tessa Thompson after a night of partying.

“There’s plenty more hotels. How did you find me in that hotel?” he mused. “I’ve always wondered that. I never told anyone I was going there, but [you] found me at 10 in the morning. Incredible! I love you guys. I didn’t want to leave it, though. I didn’t want to leave — [I’m] a little bit angry.”
He also acknowledged that celebrities like him can be a little demanding and needy. “You’re very decent to people like us who are very frustrating. I know you know, we’re like, ‘Oh, can I get a plus 18 to that party tonight?’” he added. “I get it. I get it, we’re annoying, and you guys are very supportive.”
He even made a goofy face, sticking his tongue out, saying that he knows that’s probably the face most of the publicists in that room have made on more than one occasion while talking to one of their famous clients.
“Hollywood is just a city full of immature idiots, and you guys are a bunch of very hardworking patient parents. We all love you,” he concluded, before throwing in one last very little, minor, no-big-deal demand.
“I do need to talk to you about this party I want to get into this weekend,” he smiled. “It’s got a good gift bag!”
“The eight hours of drinking, laughter and funny stupidity was followed by two days of feeling like a bowl of dog mess.”
For years now, the cast of “Full House” has talked about how they’ve become more like a family than just a group of people who did a show (or two) together. That was more true than ever after Dave Coulier opened up about his sobriety.
Immediately after the actor and comedian posted a startling image to his Instagram page on Thursday from before he chose sobriety, the comments began to fill up with messages of love and support from his “House” casts.

Coulier was one of the main stars of the original “Full House” series, and a frequent guest star on the more recent sequel series, “Fuller House.” But it wasn’t until January 1, 2020 that Coulier said he began his journey into sobriety, meaning he was dealing with his alcoholism through at least some of those show years.
Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.
The image Coulier shared was one of his face looking beaten and bloodied. “I was a drunk. Yes. An alcoholic,” he captioned the image. “When I drank, I was the life of the party. I could make people laugh until they fell down. In this picture, I was the one who fell down.”
As he explained, the injury can’t be tied to anything other than drunken clumsiness. “I was hammered and fell, going up some stairs made of stone,” he admitted.
He went on to explain, “No one loved having ‘beers with the boys’ after playing hockey or a round of golf more than me. I was always the ‘final final’ guy in the room.”
But there was a price to be paid for being the “life of the party,” as it were. “The eight hours of drinking, laughter and funny stupidity was followed by two days of feeling like a bowl of dog mess,” Coulier said. “I loved booze, but it didn’t love me back.”

And so, he decided to make a decision for his health, his well-being, his family and “for those around me who I love so dearly.”
He admitted to struggles along the way, and that he needed the support of his wife, Melissa, and “friends who had already made the journey, but that it has been well worth it. Coulier said the transformation both physical and psychological has “been amazing.”
“The sky is more blue, my heart is no longer closed, and I enjoy making people laugh until they fall down more than ever before,” he wrote.
In the comments to his post, John Stamos wrote, “proud of you brother,” while Candace Cameron Bure added, “Love you and always proud of you.” Scott Weinger commented with emojis: “???❤️” with Andrea Barber penning, “I love you and I’m so proud of you. You inspire me! ❤️”

Candace Cameron Bure also weighed in, writing, “Love you and always proud of you.”
Coulier replied, “Thank you, poopoo. Love you.”
And it wasn’t just co-stars who applauded Coulier for his accomplishments.
Earlier in the day, the actor revealed in a lengthy Instagram caption that he has been sober for over two years.
The comedian shared a photo of his face covered in blood after falling “up some stairs made of stone” after a night of drinking.
“I was a drunk. Yes. An alcoholic. I’ve been alcohol free since January 1, 2020,” Coulier captioned his post. “When I drank, I was the life of the party. I could make people laugh until they fell down. In this picture I was the one who fell down.
“Not because I was playing hockey or doing the things I love – like chopping wood or doing construction, golfing, fishing or flying airplanes,” he continued. “I was hammered and fell, going up some stairs made of stone.”
Coulier also thanked his wife, Melissa Coulier, for staying by his side through it all.
“I decided to make a decision for my own well-being, my family and for those around me who I love so dearly. The mental and physical withdrawal were big challenges for me, but I was supported by @melissacoulier and friends who had already made the journey,” he shared.
“The psychological and physical transformation has been amazing. The sky is more blue, my heart is no longer closed, and I enjoy making people laugh until they fall down more than ever before.”
He added. “Thank you, Melissa, for being by my side. I love you❤️.”
His wife also expressed her support, commenting, “SO proud of you. I love you and your strength so much!! ❤️❤️”
“Proud is an understatement,” she added in a post shared to her Instagram Story.
It’s the list that may have sent many prominent New Yorkers into damage control this week after they were accidentally outed as alleged “main clients” of the Sarah Lawrence sex cult prostitute.
The list – reviewed by The Post on Wednesday — appears to represent a cross-section of Manhattan’s elite: From Wall Street to the justice system and even the art industry.
Some of the 121 names bear unusual monikers shared by several reputable Big Apple businessmen, including a financier whose name also pops up in pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s infamous black book.
Another appears to be a hedge fund manager whose title is brandished on a museum.
Others include an ex-New York State Supreme Court judge, a Gap Inc. executive and her husband and an Amazon account executive.
A painter who splits his time between New York and Italy, an architect who has designed university campuses and a travel editor are apparently featured on the list.
Names matching an international diamond dealer and a Washington, DC-based lobbyist are also included.
Those on the list are alleged to be frequent clients of Claudia Drury – the now-31-year-old hooker who alleges to have been under the thumb of accused Lawrence sex-trafficker Larry Ray.
The so-called client list, which was admitted under seal at Ray’s ongoing federal trial Tuesday, was never meant to see the light of day.
But it was “inadvertently” uploaded by the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office to a public share system before quickly being deleted.
“Please do not reproduce, share, or use this exhibit in any way. If you have downloaded this file, please delete it,” a rep for the office said in a statement sent to media outlets asking about the mistake.
Drury, the prosecution’s prize witness who has testified that Ray made several million dollars by prostituting her, sent the list in a 2018 e-mail to Ray’s alleged cohort, Isabella Pollok.
Ray, 62, has been incarcerated since he was arrested in early 2020 on extortion and sex trafficking charges.
He is accused of exploiting several Sarah Lawrence, who were roommates of his daughter, for a decade to obtain money, power and sex for himself.
His trial so far has suffered repeated interruptions, with Ray apparently falling ill and having to be wheeled out for treatment twice this month alone.
PORT ST. LUCIE — Mark Canha is still adjusting to all the attention he’s receiving this spring with the Mets.
It’s not just the veteran outfielder getting the star treatment. With all the extra staff the team has added under Steve Cohen’s ownership, there is definitely a noticeable difference between playing for the Athletics — Canha’s former employer — and the Mets.
“I feel like someone is always asking me if I need help,” Canha said Friday. “It’s just there are so many resources here, the staff has been incredible. I’m not used to this many people asking me if I need anything all the time.”
Canha took the Mets’ two-year offer worth $26.5 million in November, with the perks of a major market in mind. After seven seasons in Oakland, he says he was ready for a larger stage. A self-described “food guy,” he’s anticipating a dive into the city’s restaurant scene.
Any kind of cuisine works just fine for the 33-year-old Canha.
“I like everything,” he said.
Canha owned a .231/.358/.387 slash line with 17 homers and 61 RBIs in 161 games last season. His most positive attribute might be his plate discipline: Canha ranked in MLB’s 91st percentile in chase rate, according to baseball savant. Canha also walked 77 times last season and tied for the major league lead with 27 hit by pitches.
“Not my best work,” Canha said of his stat line. “But I think I did what I do, and that’s get on base and put together good at-bats, and I think a lot of things I do at the plate don’t necessarily show up in the stat book, like work counts and make pitchers throw pitches. I think I have honed that part of the game, and if I just sharpen the other tools a little bit, I will be back where I want to be.”
He will join Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte in a revamped Mets outfield that doesn’t include Michael Conforto, who declined the team’s qualifying offer worth $18.4 million after the season and remains a free agent.
Canha can play all three outfield positions and first base. Last year, he started 81 games in left field, 16 in center and 11 in right. He played left field in Friday’s intrasquad scrimmage at Clover Park.
Team president Sandy Alderson and general manager Billy Eppler recruited Canha, visiting him at home in Arizona during the offseason. Alderson spent 2018-19 as a consultant with Oakland and got to know Canha, who attended Cal-Berkeley.
And Canha has quickly emerged as a favorite of manager Buck Showalter.
“He is a trustworthy guy,” Showalter said. “I told him yesterday, ‘I am so happy you are here.’ He’s a guy that is engaged. He doesn’t have a day [off] mentally or emotionally. He’s very disciplined and attuned with his body and the competition. He’s just a guy you know what you are going to get from every day as far as approach to games.”
Canha was in the airport last weekend, on his way to spring training, when he received a call from Eppler, about to complete a deal with Oakland for pitcher Chris Bassitt.
“It was a last-minute check [from Eppler], and I gave Chris a glowing review because he is the best,” Canha said.
In Oakland, Canha played for a highly-regarded manager in Bob Melvin [who departed for the Padres after the season], and he now receives another in Showalter.
“I respect the heck out of Buck, and I was really happy it was him when that decision process was done,” Canha said. “I was excited to play for a guy who has been around the game so long and has the reputation that he has. That is what you want when you have a team like this, so it has been awesome.”
