When will UCF join the Big 12? An exciting chapter for UCF begins under a new conference schedule

The long wait is over as UCF is set to become a Big 12 school. It’s joining the conference with other three institutions: BYU, Cincinnati and Houston. This is the culmination of a realignment move that started with the departure of Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12.

In a move to balance up its lost heavyweights, the conference invited UCF and three other institutions to join its ranks. UCF, Cincinnati and Houston reached an agreement with the American Athletic Conference to phase out of the conference by July 2023.

Along with the other new members, UCF will be appearing in the Big 12 Media Days 2023 as first-timers. Coach Gus Malzahn will be at the event, accompanied by five players: Javon Baker, Ricky Barber, John Rhys Plumlee, Josh Celiscar and Lokahi Pauole.

UCF’s Big 12 schedule

The Knights will play Big 12 opponents during the regular season for the first time this season. Their first conference matchup will be against Kansas State on Sept. 23. Facing the current champions of the conference is a befitting way to welcome the Knights into competitive Big 12 football.

The immediate task before the team will be to prove itself worthy of its place in the conference. In Kansas State, it faces the best that the Big 12 has to offer.

Beyond that, the Knights will host Baylor on Sept. 30. Playing in front of their home fans will afford them an advantage they’ll miss against Kansas State.

They will be on the road for their next two games: a trip to Kansas and another to face future Southeastern Conference member Oklahoma. The games are scheduled for Oct. 7 and 21. For the rest of the regular season, they will alternate between home and away games.

Against West Virginia on Oct. 28, they will be home. They’ll then travel to face Cincinnati on Nov. 4, returning home to face Oklahoma State on Nov. 11. Their next game will see them taking on Texas Tech away on Nov. 18. They’ll return home to close their regular season against fellow new school Houston on Nov. 25.

Hochul’s work schedule shows plenty of time for fundraising

It appears Gov. Kathy Hochul devoted plenty of time and energy racking up a record-breaking, nearly $22 million in campaign donations during her early months in the state’s top office.

Hochul’s recently released daily work schedules show she attended 224 “private events” over a three-month period, from October through December.

It’s unclear how many of these private events were for fundraising or other campaign activities, and Hochul’s office could not immediately provide a breakdown on Saturday.

Unlike her predecessor, ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Hochul’s released schedules don’t specify which blocks of time are campaign-related.

However, the vast number of “private events” on her schedule offers a first glimpse of the extra time she had on her hands to help amass $21.9 million in campaign funds from Aug. 13 to Jan. 14 — a record amount for a state filing period.

Hochul – who replaced scandal-scarred Cuomo in August after the disgraced pol resigned amid a sexual harassment scandal — attended 88 private events in October, 70 in November and 66 in December, records show. Her schedule also notes attending two private events in August and 47 in September.

Top Albany lobbying firms have hosted at least a dozen fundraisers for Hochul, and her schedule often notes back-to-back “private events” while she was scheduled to be in the New York City area — suggesting meetings with potential donors, according to the Times Union, which first reported on her schedule.

The newspaper also noted she used helicopters and other taxpayer-funded state aircraft 62 times traveling from October through December.

Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi, who is challenging Hochul in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, slammed Hochul’s work schedule, alleging she’s putting lobbyists and donors ahead of regular New Yorkers.

“It’s an abuse of the office she inherited, a violation of trust and of our ethics laws, all on top of an administration that is failing New Yorkers,” said Suozzi, who had $5.2 million in his campaign coffers as of mid-January.

When will Team USA play in the 2022 World Cup: Group, schedule

With eight months until the men’s 2022 FIFA World Cup, the group-stage draw for the tournament took place Friday at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center in Qatar.

This year’s contentious World Cup will take place between Nov. 21 and Dec. 18. The 32 countries competing will be split into eight groups of four in the group-stage round.

The United States Men’s National Team will be making its first appearance in eight years after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Reigning champion France is expected to have another impressive run and Brazil is also regarded as a favorite.

Starting Wednesday — live from Madison Square Garden — the Big East men’s basketball tournament will begin with No. 8 Xavier vs. No. 9 Butler at 4:30 p.m. EST on Fox Sports 1. Hochul says COVID likely killed off traditional work schedule

The coronavirus pandemic has likely killed the traditional schedule of commuting to the office for work five days a week, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

“It may never be a five-day week again,” said Hochul.

“It may be four days with flexibility. It may be three and a half,” she said following an event in Harlem on Tuesday.

Still, the governor said she wanted employees occupying office buildings “at least three to four days at minimum” to spur economic recovery. She said in-person work spurs creativity and social development.

“People staying home now are missing a state comeback,” she said.

The governor said the decline of the COVID-19 omicron wave and lifting of mask mandates should put New Yorkers at ease about commuting and in-person work.

Hochul also acknowledged there’s a concern among employers that they’ll lose workers who’ve gotten accustomed to remote work during the pandemic if they order them back to the office five days a week.

The head of the city’s largest business group agreed that Hochul’s assessment about work location flexibility was correct.

“Gov. Hochul has met with a lot of employers over the past few months and she is accurately reflecting their view of the future of office work. People will be expected back in the office but with some greater flexibility than in the past,” said Kathryn Wylde, CEO of the Partnership for the City of New York.

Business leaders have also raised concerns about the surge in violent crime and thefts during the two-year pandemic — particularly in the subway — that poses an obstacle to brining workers back to Manhattan offices.

The Post previously reported that city firms offered nearly quadruple the number of remote jobs to new applicants in the past year — meaning a growing trend of employees working mostly or exclusively outside the main office.

Francisco Alvarez ‘ahead of schedule’ with defensive ability

PORT ST. LUCIE — Francisco Alvarez’s bat will ultimately be the biggest factor in his rise through the Mets’ farm system, but the organization would also like to see strides from the 20-year-old catcher behind the plate.

“His defense has progressed how we thought it would and with that there’s places he needs to develop,” Mets director of player development Kevin Howard said Monday. “In terms of his age and what is expected he’s ahead of schedule with all his defense.”

Howard was asked what specifically Alvarez needs to improve.

“I really think it’s the whole thing,” Howard said. “Obviously blocking is in there and receiving to his arm side is the main thing that we’re trying to clean up, some of the strikes he loses. But all and all he is above a kid for his age when you look at the industry and catching.”

Alvarez, the organization’s top prospect — he homered 24 times in 99 games last season between Low-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn — said last week that his goal is to play in the major leagues this season.

“That should be everybody here’s goal,” Howard said. “Trying to get there and that being your goal, and then expecting it and reacting when it doesn’t happen, those are two different things. I think Francisco is very realistic about what actually could happen and I think he is just going to control the things he can control.”

Brett Baty and Mark Vientos are expected to each play the outfield once a week to begin the season as the Mets evaluate both third basemen at other positions. Vientos finished last season at Triple-A Syracuse and Baty at Double-A Binghamton. Both players took reps in the outfield last season.

Howard, who became the Mets’ assistant hitting coach in May after joining the organization to work in player development, said he is happy returning to the role for which he was hired.

“I think we’re all in it to pull for the organization and any way we can help and I think that is what we were trying to do last year,” Howard said. “I do think I am better fit for this role. I think it’s the job I have the most interest in from my previous experiences and kind of the things I have gone through in the past have led me here and I feel like this is where I am supposed to be.”

USA vs. Canada time, channel, TV schedule to watch 2022 Olympic women’s gold-medal hockey game

Yet another Olympic gold medal will come down to the United States and Canada in women’s hockey.

The Olympic women’s hockey tournament gold-medal match will now have been between the two North American rivals in six of the seven times it has been held in its history. Canada has been in the gold-medal match for every gold-medal round and Sweden was the only other team besides the two to reach the final.

The two have already faced off once during these games, having met in the Group A round of the tournament. The United States fired significantly more shots at 53 to Canada’s 27 and had six tries on power plays compared to just one by Canada, and it got off to a 2-1 lead midway through the game.

But Brianne Jenner scored her second goal of the game to tie the matchup with eight minutes left in the second period, and Jamie Lee Rattray and Marie-Philip Poulin each added marks before the end of the period to put Canada up 4-2, a score by which it would win.
