A Texas judge on Thursday ruled that there was no probable cause to charge a teacher accused of stuffing her son inside the trunk of her car because she didn’t want to be exposed to COVID-19.
Sarah Beam, 41, was purportedly caught in the awkward situation at a Houston COVID-19 testing site on Jan. 3 after witnesses reported hearing noises coming from the back of her vehicle.
A health services director at the site later discovered the teenager in the trunk and called police. Beam was charged with endangering a child.
Despite Thursday’s ruling, Beam isn’t necessarily out of the woods yet as prosecutors told KHOU in a statement that they may consider taking the case to a grand jury.
“We respect the judge’s ruling and we will continue with our work,” Harris County District Attorney spokesperson Dan Schiller told the outlet.
Beam has worked as a teacher in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District since 2011.
She was placed on administrative leave following the highly publicized incident.
