Port ST. LUCIE – The COVID-19 protocol flings over Matt Allen attaching himself to Jacob DeGrom’s hip.
But within reason, the Mets have called their top pitching prospect to do so.
In his first big league spring training, Allen is getting a chance to talk, know and talk to DeGrom – no coincidence – and the 19-year-old right-hander is a two-time Cy Young winner.
“[Minor league pitching coordinator Ricky Meinhold] Originally said, ‘Wear her with questions. He is ready, he knows that you are going to close his ears. Exactly wear it with any questions you have, ”Allen said after the workout on Thursday. He said, “I have done the work around me without question and it has always been so good to give and give me an honest answer. An explanation, don’t just say, ‘This is what I do.’ He said, ‘This is what I do and that is why I do it.’ “
This is an invaluable experience for Allen, a 2019 Mets third-round pick who they were able to sign with an over-slot $ 2.5 million to make up for lost time in particular. He made a wrench for the first play-off run for CO-ID-19 to Low-A-Brooklyn, before COVID-19 threw what should have been the first full season of minor league baseball.
Allen entered the Mets’ player pool in August, allowing him to pitch at an alternate venue in Brooklyn and then again in his directorial league. He previously credited Meinhold and the Mets for putting him on a good schedule, believing he has a good position for a full season of work this year.
This was during MLB’s COVID-19 shutdown last year when Allen first joined Degrom, both of whom threw at Stetson. This waterfall helped break the ice, making Alan feel more comfortable around him, saying that their conversation was a two-way street.
“He listens to the people around him, he’s looking for that experience, things that might face him in the near future,” manager Luis Rojas said. “The maturity level is the one thing that stands out, and then when you see the stuff, it’s when it’s eye-popping for real.”
Rosas said that he would like to see Allen in this game if possible. Meanwhile, he can be found on a backfield or bullpen near DeGrom.
Alan said, “I’m a big contestant and at the end of the day I want to win.” “For me, winning the championship two years ago in Brooklyn, I want to do it again. Wherever I am, I want to be part of a championship team.”
