Three killed in partial collapse of Siberian factory

Company officials said on Saturday that at least three people died after a partial collapse of a processing plant owned by the controversial Russian mining company Norilsk Nickel.

The accident happened while the maintenance work was going on in the factory, Reuters reported.

This is not the first time Nornikel has reported an accident at one of its facilities. Last year, the city of Norilsk had a number of minor issues along with a major fuel leak at its power plant.

Regional investigators have conducted a criminal investigation into the crash, Reuters said.

Earlier, Nornickel vowed to spend $ 1.4 billion on increasing its industrial security over the next five years.

Nornickel said an ore-loading section of the plant collapsed on Saturday, probably due to a safety breach. Company officials said the head of the plant has been suspended.
