Tiger Woods and son Charlie: Father-son duo makes second appearance at PNC Championship

Tiger Woods will make his return to golf after a year long hiatus, mostly due to his severe car crash in February, at this weekend’s PNC Championship as he plays along side his son, Charlie.

Fans were shocked that Woods was making his return to golf this soon, but it seems like the father-son aspect encouraged him to come back and play. 

“Although it’s been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie. I’m playing as a Dad and couldn’t be more excited and proud,” Woods said in a Twitter statement.

This isn’t the first time the father-son duo has played in a tournament together; they played in the 2020 PNC Championship as well, which was Charlie’s PGA debut. The 12-year-old began playing in some junior tournaments this year as well, which father Tiger attends on occasion.

Charlie will join dad Tiger again this year, and their close knit relationship is expected to be center stage once again. We could possibly be watching the future of golf.

A video was released in the week leading up to the 2021 PNC Championship that showed split screens of Tiger and Charlie having similar mannerisms while they play golf. Tiger was shown this video, and his reaction was priceless. 

It’s almost as if Charlie has been watching his father play golf his whole life. Tiger was shocked by how similar their club twirls are, followed by picking up their tees. Additionally, Tiger’s infamous fist pump seems to be passed down since Charlie recreated this celebration a few times in last year’s tournament. That got the crowd excited, for sure.

One funny mannerism is that both Woods’ struggle with allergies, according to Tiger, so they both scratch their nose while they play. 

Like last year, the duo should wear the same outfits again at this year’s PNC Championship. Last year, the pair wore purple polos on Saturday, and then they of course wore red on Sunday to pay homage to Tiger’s traditional Sunday red outfit.

Tiger and Charlie Woods 2020 PNC Championship results

At the 2020 PNC Championship, Tiger and Charlie ended up in seventh place after shooting a combined -20. Justin Thomas and his father, Mike, won the tournament at -25. 

Tiger seemed to really enjoy playing with his son, as he was seen smiling throughout the tournament. 

“I don’t think words can describe it,” Tiger said, via CBS Sports. “The fact that we were able to have this experience together — it’s memories for a lifetime.”

Charlie impressed viewers in his PGA debut as well. During the first round, Charlie made an eagle off his own shots on the third hole. His second shot was hit to go around trees as well. This highlight sparked some praise on Twiter, including from LeBron James. Charlie also made a few birdies throughout the tournament, showing that he can putt just like his dad.

Woods is currently playing on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, which is the largest junior golf tour right now. Woods’ rank is tied at 135 in the boys ages 11-13 division. His profile on the HJGT states that his average score is 83. This would mean his handicap ranges around 10, although Woods currently doesn’t have an official handicap.

Woods’ profile shows that he’s participated in five HJGT events this year. His lowest score was +19 at the South Florida Summer Kickoff in June. Otherwise, Woods tends to shoot between +20 and +30. 

Back in August 2020, Woods actually won a US Kids Golf sanctioned event at Hammock Creek Golf Club by five strokes. He finished -3 and was the only finisher under par. This is his best known finish.
