Tiger Woods’ career and life: rising high, terrible fear

Tuesday’s car accident was the latest shocking turn of events in Tiger Woods’ career, which has seen a few high-strung and scared cows. Here’s a look:

High

1997 Masters: At the age of 21, Woods became the youngest winner in Augusta, posting an all-time record score (270) and a margin of victory (12 shots). He also became the first non-white winner in tournament history.

2000 US Open: Woods landed one of the most prominent performances in golf history on Pebble Beach, with the largest margin on the field to win by 15 shots.

The Tiger Slam: By winning the 2001 Masters, Woods becomes the only player to hold all four golf major championships at the same time. Woods is a combined 65-under par in four majors, including the 2000 British Open in St Andrews and the 2000 PGA Championship in Wellhala.

A family man: Woods married Eileen Nordgren, a Swedish model, in October 2004. She gives birth to their first child, daughter Samantha in June 2007 and their son Charlie two years later.

2008 US Open: Playing a badly injured knee, Woods won his 14th Major, advancing to one of Jack Nicklaus’ four records. He defeated Rocco Mediate on the first hole of sudden death after an 18-hole playoff at Torke Pines.

Back to the winner’s circle: Woods won the 2012 Arnold Palmer Invitational for his first PGA Tour win since the scandal in his personal life.

Circling in the form: In 2018, Woods took the lead in the final round of the British Open before making a double bogey on the sixth-tied 12th hole. He closes with a 64, his lowest final round in a major, and is runner-up to Brooks Copka at the PGA Championship. A few months later, he won the Tour Championship for the 80th win of his career on the PGA Tour, shaming Sam Snead’s record.

Guru, then: Woods won the 2019 Masters for his fifth Green Jacket and the 15th major title in 15 years. He steps within three wins of Nicklas’ record for major competitions.

An expensive win: A week after winning the 2008 US Open, Woods has undergone reconstructive surgery on his left knee to repair a torn ACL and two stress fractures in his left tibia. He is out for eight months.

Thanks from hell: On Thanksgiving, according to a 2009 National Enquirer report, Woods crashed his SUV into a tree and a fire hydrant outside his Windermere, Fla., Home. It is revealed that Nordgren smashed one of the car windows with the Golf Club.

Sex Scandal: Many women come forward with stories of sexual encounters with Woods, from a club hostess to Perkins waitress to porn star. He loses major sponsorship support and spends 45 days in a clinic, not returning to golf until the 2010 Masters. In August 2010, her divorce from Nordgren was finalized.

Back Surgery: Woods had his first surgery in April 2014, a week before his Masters, recalling the incident for the first time. He has four more back surgeries – September 2015, October 2015, in April 2017 (to fuse his lower back) and December 2020.

DUI arrest: Woods was arrested in May 2017 and Jupiter, Fla., On suspicion of DUI. I was jailed. Police found him sleeping behind the wheel of his car early in the morning with the engine running. He attributes this to a poor combination of pain medication, ultimately blaming him for careless driving and agreeing to enter the diversion program.

LA Accident: Woods is in a single-car accident in suburban Los Angeles and is ejected from a rolled vehicle, suffering leg injuries requiring surgery.
