“Today” co-anchor Craig Melvin revealed his adorable 5-year-old daughter, Sybil, is behind his new ear piercing.
“My daughter, she went to get her ears pierced for her fifth birthday, and she wanted daddy to participate so daddy took one for the team,” Melvin, 42, told his co-hosts Wednesday.
Savannah Guthrie then asked, “Wow, so are you going to keep it.”
Melvin hesitated, and said, “Well, I don’t think … we’ll see.”
Al Roker, referencing the pain of getting a piercing, said, “If you did all that, what the heck?”
Guthrie joked, “You know me, I think you should have multiple piercings.”
Roker, 67, then ribbed Melvin saying, “How do you know he doesn’t?”
“No, no, no, this is it,” Melvin clarified. “This is the only piercing.”
The weatherman continued teasing his colleague, saying, “Why don’t you get an eyepatch and a parrot? It’d be fantastic.”
Viewers praised Melvin on social media for his sweet gesture toward his daughter.
“I think that this is awesome!” one person tweeted. “Even if Craig doesn’t keep it, Babygirl will remember what her dad did for her on that day and that memory will last a lifetime. I knew Uncle @alroker was going to have a zinger. I was like….wait for it… LOL! Thanks for the laughs. Blessings.”
Another warned that if the journalist were to remove the piercing it would “be kind of life breaking a promise,” adding, “It looks amazing and you are rocking it. Plus the whole family got one together. KEEP IT!”
However, others weren’t such big fans of the bling, with one person noting, “Nice to do to support daughter but take it out.”
In September, Melvin posted photos of his daughter on his Instagram on her first day of pre-school.
He captioned the cute pics of the little girl in uniform, “My little girl isn’t so little anymore.
So proud of you, Sibby!”
Aside from Sybil, Melvin and his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, also share a 7-year-old son named Delano.
