Earlier this week, Tom Brady lamented the lack of roughing the passer calls he gets but admitted he also gets away with plenty of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
On Sunday, he got a double whammy — and only had a busted lip to show for it.
Brady was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty midway through the second quarter after barking at referee Shawn Hochuli for not calling a roughing the passer penalty on Von Miller in the Buccaneers-Rams NFC divisional round game.
Miller made contact with Brady after he threw a pass, with the edge rusher’s helmet appearing to land just under the quarterback’s facemask before Miller let up. Almost immediately, upon seeing no flags on the field, Brady turned to Hochuli and began screaming to make his case, pointing to his bloodied lip.
It didn’t take long for Brady to apparently say the magic word as Hochuli soon reached for his own flag, which cost the Buccaneers 15 yards.
Brady came back to complete a 19-yard pass on the next play but the drive ended in Ryan Succop missing a 48-yard field goal attempt as the Rams maintained their 17-3 lead over the Bucs, who trailed 20-3 at halftime. Brady was 10-for-22 with 112 yards and an interception through two quarters.
On his own “Let’s Go!” podcast earlier this week, Brady, whose status for next season is up in the air, seemed to foreshadow Sunday’s ordeal.
“I always hear that to different degrees about getting penalties and so forth and roughing the passers,” Brady said. “They say that and I’m always in my mind going, ‘I don’t remember the last time I got a roughing the passer.’ … I don’t feel like I get them as much as people may think that I get them.
“I do know that they probably let me get away with a lot of unsportsmanlike conducts, talking smack to the other team and talking smack to the refs when I don’t think I get the right call. I’m kind of a pain in their ass if you don’t already know that.”
