Turntable.fm is back from the dead – and now there are two

It is rare that apps come back from the dead, but it seems that this may be what is happening with the turntable. FM, a site that sets you up with your own radio-station and DJ set music that you curated before the music closed in 2014. Rarely, it appears that there are two versions included in the revival: the original Turntable.fm site is back up and running ( Participation of its original founder, Billy Chasen), but there will also be Turntable.org, which It will reportedly be launched in beta this April.

Both sites seem to be taking different directions – Turntable.orgThe new version mentions that the membership fee (probably not a bad idea, given the fate of the first version), while the original seems largely unchanged from the one that closed in 2014. While the original founder has confirmed that it is included with the .fm version, the .org version also has OGs working on it: an original turntable founding member in our team segment as well as designing the original incarnations in 2011 The mentioning artist is mentioned.

The original app, and the current turntable.fam, lets you create a virtual room, then listen to any music you want to play. At the moment, the song’s selection is limited to being available on YouTube, so you probably won’t be able to slide stealthily into your mixup. There seems to be a SoundCloud integration that is not working yet.

Also, the entire site is phasing out of existence and within, perhaps because of the word of it coming back:

Assuming you can find your way, then the audience can talk about your selection of brilliant (or terrible) songs. You can also co-DJ with colleagues if you feel like being referred by a friend or colleague. While the app looks very similar to what it was used to, there are some 2021 updates: My avatar has a mask, and gametop stickers are available for DJ’s virtual laptop.

Both Nyan Cat and Gametop are strangely relevant in 2021.

Turntable.fm shut down in 2013, following a drawn-out battle for survival that we watched closely, hoping the app would make it. Every piece of news was pointed out that it would never return, but today the site is back again – asking for a password to gain access. To access the password, the site requests that you send an email including your favorite song (it says that if it’s a good song, I’ll allow you to).

The original site was loved by many, right here at The Reporter Door, and it is a wonder to see it back. The world, especially the music industry, has changed a lot since 2013, and it remains to be seen what, if any, lessons Turntable.fm and Turntable.org are going to, from the first go around, and take. Other replacements that have popped up Since its demise. The page about turntable.fm still claims that it is music selected by people, not algorithms, which may just be the new / old thing that is needed today.
