You could say that episode 8, “Before”, was also a tribute to classic television, if you could add again this is your Life As It’s your shock. Under fear from Agatha Harkness, Wanda recreates moments of tragedy that lead to her current internal upheaval, continuing from the day her parents died to how she did Hydra Obtained his powers from Mind Stone in the lab, with his growing finale, and then losing vision.

All of this was because Agatha had a hunch that Wanda was an actual witch, not just a Hydra experiment, and to learn how she was made so powerful. Agatha has been practicing black magic for over 400 years, but never came close to the power or skill needed to control the mind and transform the entire city for weeks.

The episode concludes with Agatha announcing her realization. “You must be a myth. To be capable of spontaneous creation […] This is Chaos Magic, Wanda. And that makes you a Scarlet Witch. ”

He said scarlet witch!

Until Vandavision, Marvel Cinematic has avoided – some might say – that Wanda should shy away from presenting her powers as having their origins in magic. Her mental and telekinetic abilities were just gifts from Mind Stone during Hydra’s experiments, and no one ever said her superhero name “Scarlet Witch” from the comics. But episode 8 Vandavision Finally closes the loop, and funnily it is almost a mirror of how the powers of the Scarlet Witch evolved over time in the comics.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as an X-Men villain, Wanda’s first explanation for her powers was that she was a mutant with control over “Chance”. With her “hex” power, she can lead to incredibly unlikely results, which is to say that she could do anything about the authors, causing bullets to fall into the air and break the gas main passages and Entire buildings collapse.

It wasn’t until a decade after her first appearance The avengers Writer Steve Englehart decided to make good on the “witch” part of the scarlet witch’s name, including the magic of his studies (under the comics version of Agatha Harkness). Wanda is not the only example of Marvel combining mutant powers and magic into one character, but she certainly helped make that combination a main pillar of the X-Men continuum, not just that of Marvel’s current X-Men books. One in a row includes all series about mutant magic, Excalibur.

Eventually, other writers gave Wanda’s brand a specific source of magic: The God of the-Chaos-Turn-Enforced-Demon-Love-Craft-Style-Crispy-Force-of-the-Dark-Lock-In-Al -Optional Dimension Chthon. Chethan’s place of power was Mount Vundagor, a fictional place in Eastern Europe where Wanda was born. Maybe it’s not going to make Vandavision, But it includes Chaos Magic’s Wanda among the biggest winners in the Marwar Universe.

Chaos Magic has the power to change the very fabric of reality. Don’t ask how it differs from magic that creates fire or flowers or bunnies where there were none before: it’s comics, and it’s magic. The rules are not very specific. You should just know that Chaos Magic is very powerful, very rare, and very dangerous.

This episode may have given viewers a glimpse of a headpiece with a long skirt and two long crown-like spikes in what may be an updated version of Wanda’s Scarlet Witch costume. A glimpse of Agatha’s backstory that we got in episode 8, when you use magic really hard, It seems to give you a crown:

Agatha Harkness' mother explodes blue magic with her hands as it gives her the crown of blue magic in Vandavision.

Between that and a vision Wanda saw in a long skirt with a crowned figure in mind stone, it looks like Vandavision Scarlett is doing her own interpretation for the Witch’s two-way headpiece. A new costume is likely to be revamped for Wanda before the season is over.

Scarlet Witch was given another comics origin story twist when she stopped being a mutant altogether. Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox cut a deal to share custody of the Scarlet Witch and QuickSilver due to the X-Men and Avengers occupying an overlapping area of continuity. But the deal rested on Marvel Studios, keeping all mutants away from Wanda and Pietro, and so Marvel Comics followed suit. That same year Avengers: Age of Ultron An issue of Wanda and Pietro introduced to film audiences Achene Avengers It turned out that the twins were not mutants at all, but were used on normal humans and then disguised as mutants.

very embarrassing.

But it does mean that in the modern Marvel Comics continuum, Wanda’s powers are entirely derived from magic. And it seems that the same applies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a long road for a character who was finally saying “Scarlet Witch” out loud, but we hope some Wanda Maximoff fans are celebrating there today.
