Creating a college football ‘super league’: these 15 schools will be cut in 2021

What will the College Football Super League look like?

This has been a question since the news of the 15-team European Football League last weekend. For college football, a Super League needs to be based on four “R’s”: revenue, relevance, rings and recruiting.

At Sporting News we attempted to build our 15-team Super League using the following criteria:

  • Revenue (15–1 score): money Talks. Which programs Make the most moneyThe They will be ranked from 1-15, with the top event scoring 15 points. It will be updated every year.
  • Record (Score 15-1): What is your Program record for the last 10 seasonsThe The top 15 FBS schools with winning percentages will be listed, with the top program receiving 15 points.
  • Rings (Score 15-1): When did your school win its last national championship? The last 15 schools scored on a 15–1 scale, with Alabama, the most recent national champion, receiving 15 points.
  • NFL Draft Pick (Score 15-1): You can counter-balance this with NCAA graduation rates, but NFL draft numbers will be ranked on the same 15-1 scale from the previous 10 drafts.

You can use those four factors to get in and out of the league every year. After all, Notre Dame, Georgia and Penn State have not won a national championship in the last 30 seasons. Boise State and Appalachian State have room to slip based on high win percentage.

Imagine watching the NFL draft for alleged purposes. Teams can be rewarded based on championships and championship performance within the Super League.

Imagine a coin flip to decide the 15th team. That formula is not correct, but it is college football after all. As you will see, this formula is not at all about territoriality.

With this in mind, the Sporting News Super League has 15 teams ranked from top to bottom:

Sporting News’ College Football Super League

1. Alabama (52)

First Crimson Tide rank, NFL draft pick and win percentage in national championships. They are one of the league’s five SEC schools.

2. Ohio State (49.5)

The Buckeyes have dominated the Big Ten and are the only Super League team to rank in the top five in every category.

3. LSU (41.5)

The Tigers 2020 national championship and high volume of NFL drafts will place them in the top five for the future, but there is competition within the SEC.

4. Clemson (38)

The Tigers will be models for events that want to be in the Super League, as they were not here during the BCS era. The Tigers are not a huge revenue-generator, but they have on-field success.

5. Georgia (34)

The Bulldogs rank second in revenue, and they come back with a strong performance in win percentage and NFL draft pick. This makes up for the national championship drought that lasted until 1980.

6. Oklahoma (33.5)

The Suners are one of two Big 12 events in the Super League, and this ranking is accurate given their inability to win the College Football Playoff semifinals, which led to continued success.

7. Notre Dame (25)

This is the right place for the Irish, an event that hasn’t won a national championship since 1988 but has managed to win the top-10 with top-10 revenue. Let’s see how Notre Dame does this conference.

t8. Texas (23)

The Longhorns ranked first in revenue with no points in NFL draft production or winning percentage. This can be fixed with it being the only Texas school to be represented in the Super League.

t8. Florida (23)

The Gators are out of the top 15 in win percentage, but they are the highest ranked team from Florida’s three leading FBS schools. Some people will disagree with the assessment that will happen in 2021.

t10. Michigan (20)

College football’s most victorious program ranks third in revenue, but they are not among the top 15 schools in winning percentages over the past decade. Is Michigan eligible for the Super League? Which would be the trend every Saturday.

t10. Florida State (20)

The Seminoles may no longer have revenue, but they won the last national championship in the BCS era and have proven that they can put together a roster flush with NFL talent.

12. Auburn (19)

The Tigers are the fifth SEC school on the list, and will be the place where schools such as Texas A&M and Tennessee will be pursued.

13. Miami (14.5)

“U” made it despite not placing in the top 15 in revenue or win percentage. They are not included in this list as a result, but now all three Florida powers are in the Super League. It is good for television.

14. Penn State (12)

The Nittany Lions rank sixth in revenue, and will be on the bubble in any given year, given the program’s final national championship 1986.

15. USC (11.5)

The Lone are representatives of the Pac-12 in the Trojan Super League, and their place has been tenacious given the competition behind them. USC still produces enough NFL talent to be relevant, but Pete Carroll Heyday fading quickly.

First five out

Boise State (11)

Out of the next four, the Broncos missed the cut by 0.5 points. A group of 5 school hurdles will be slim, but they have a better chance of being in the Super League than playing a college football playoff.

Wisconsin (10)

The Badgers will be in the mix any year based on their winning percentage and NFL draft production, but the program has an inability to win a national championship.

Nebraska (8.5)

Husn still ranks in the top 15 revenue, but they can no longer stay away from those 1990 national championships.

Appalachian State (8)

Can you imagine the rise from FCS powerhouse to Super League Cinderella?

Tennessee (8)

The most ranked SEC schools outside the Super League will be. Who are they going to debate on the basis of the 21st century?
