In today’s NHL rumors rundown, Tyler Bertuzzi will be testing free agency. Meanwhile, is William Nylander asking for more than the Toronto Maple Leafs are willing to pay? Did the Detroit Red Wings want Klim Kostin and take Kailer Yamamoto to get him? Finally, the Winnipeg Jets are planning to buy out Blake Wheeler’s contract. What does that mean moving forward?

Bertuzzi Going to Test UFA Market

It appears that Tyler Bertuzzi, a 28-year-old forward, is set to become a free agent on July 1. The Bruins sent forward Taylor Hall to the Chicago Blackhawks in a move related to salary cap considerations. The hope was that they could sign Bertuzzi with some of the freed-up cap space. It doesn’t look like that plan paid off.

This is not good news for the Bruins who also await decisions on other key players. Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, who have been longstanding franchise staples, don’t know if they’ll be returning. Additionally, Dmitry Orlov, who was acquired near the trade deadline, is also set to become an unrestricted free agent.

During the most recent season, Tyler Bertuzzi managed to record eight goals and 30 points in 50 games, despite missing some time due to a hand injury. There will be plenty of suitors for him and there’s a very good chance his time in Boston was short-lived. He wanted to test free agency prior to joining the Bruins and it looks like his run there hasn’t changed his mind.

Nylander’s Ask Higher Than Maple Leafs Want

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic, there is currently a significant difference in the desired contract ask between William Nylander and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team is reportedly not willing to meet Nylander’s desired price for a potential contract extension and while the two sides continue to try and close the gap, talk of a potential trade has popped up.

Nylander, who is eligible to sign an extension starting Saturday, also has a 10-team no-trade list that kicks in on the same date. This means that he can specify ten teams to which he cannot be traded without his consent. The 27-year-old forward is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024. LeBrun says one of the issues for the Maple Leafs is that the trade market has dried up and the big return for a player like Nylander might not be there.

Red Wings to Sign Kostin, Buy Out Yamamoto

According to Mark Spector, “I’m told that the player Yzerman really wanted was Kostin. I assume he’ll sign in the next 24 hours.” He adds, “Then we find out how much Red Wings covet Yamamoto. I really do not know the answer to that at this point. There is every chance both players open season as Red Wings.” It was later learned that the Red Wings were buying out Yamamoto’s contract and he was one of many players placed on waivers Friday.

The fact is, Edmonton couldn’t compete against the KHL’s offer to Kostin but the Red Wings can. Darren Dreger reports, “Detroit strongly considered keeping him but couldn’t make moves to make it work. Given tight cap, Yamamoto is a good young player hitting the market.”

Jets to Buy Out Blake Wheeler

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Winnipeg Jets are processing Blake Wheeler’s buyout. “He will be on waivers today. There will be a number of teams with interest in signing the veteran as a free agent, including the Dallas Stars,” the insider writes. Wheeler’s buyout of the final year $8.25M Cap Hit & Salary carries the following cap hits: Year 1 $2.75M cap hit ($5.5M savings) Year 2 $2.75M Cap hit/cost.

Wheeler was a former captain of the Jets before being stripped of the “C” ahead of the 2022-23 season. He is a pure playmaking veteran winger who can still pass the puck and produce primary assists at a high rate.

  • Jets’ Zach Wilson must avoid temptation to rush greatness

    [ad_1]

It is a wonderful time to be Zach Wilson. The Jets have gone out of their way to surround and support the quarterback with playmakers and protectors, and when they trumpet “Take flight” as a slogan, they are counting on him to one day land the plane, and they still believe that one day he will.

But in the meantime, before the summer of his second season even begins, it is critical that Wilson and the organization navigate the expectations for who he is now, and who they and long-suffering Jets fans hope and pray he can yet be.

“He doesn’t need to be Tom Brady this year. … If he ends up being that, that’s awesome,” head coach Robert Saleh said, “but that’s not the expectation for him. The expectation is for him to continue to climb that mountain.”

For Jets quarterbacks who have followed Joe Namath, most recently Sam Darnold, it has proven akin to climbing Mount Everest.

It is terrific that the franchise quarterback is a young man in a hurry. But Wilson needs to resist the temptation and desire to make that climb today.

“I really do have a lot of confidence in myself,” he said. “Obviously I think I can be one of the best, and I think if anybody doesn’t say that then they’re not a true competitor.”

    And:

“I see the best play the game, and I think I can do the same thing right now.”

Except he can’t, and his maturation demands that he acknowledge and accept that.

The Jets released tight end Ryan Griffin, who was squeezed out by the free-agent additions of C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin.

Griffin, 32, had 34 catches and five touchdowns in 2019 but his production dwindled over the next two seasons and he finished 2021 on injured reserve. He would’ve been due a $2.6 million salary and leaves behind about $200,000 in dead-cap space.

Griffin signed a three-year contract extension during his first season with the Jets in 2019. He finished that season on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and spent the last two games of last season on IR with a knee injury.

Griffin was a sixth-round pick of Houston in 2013 out of Connecticut. He spent his first six NFL seasons with the Texans before signing with the Jets in 2019. Griffin has 206 receptions for 2,158 yards and 14 touchdowns in nine NFL seasons.

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Joe Douglas showed his willingness to swing a big trade for a wide receiver last week. Now the question is whether he will get another chance at it.

There are four weeks until the NFL Draft, and there could be more trades made in the lead-up. Douglas is armed with nine picks, four in the top 38, which provides him ammunition to make a move if one presents itself.

These big wide receiver trades tend to happen suddenly and out of nowhere. Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill were traded without the public knowing they were being shopped until the last minute in Hill’s case and not at all with Adams. Douglas and the Jets did their best to land Hill, but he chose the Dolphins.

With these trades being as secretive as they’ve been, it’s hard to project exactly who might be the next receiver to hit the block. There are rumors the Titans could move A.J. Brown and the Seahawks could part with DK Metcalf, both of whom are in the final years of their contracts.

Jets quarterback Zach Wilson enjoyed a trip to the beach in Miami this weekend, and it appears he wasn’t alone.

In new photos obtained by The Post, Wilson seemed to soak up the sun with teammate Braxton Berrios and an unnamed blonde, who was photographed in a cream-colored bikini and dark sunglasses.

Wilson and his party relaxed on lounge chairs while surrounded by other beachgoers.

It’s unclear if the woman accompanied the Jets stars to the beach, or if they made fast friends while out and about in Miami this past weekend.

Wilson, 22, is believed to be single after he and longtime girlfriend Abbey Gile quietly scrubbed one another from their Instagram pages in January. The move fueled fan speculation that the pair had called it quits.

Berrios, meanwhile, is dating model Sophia Culpo — the younger sister of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Olivia Culpo. The couple has been spending time in Miami this offseason, which has also included quite the payday for Berrios, 26.

Earlier this month, the Jets re-signed the receiver to a two-year, $12 million deal, which includes $7 million in guarantees. They celebrated his new deal with a lavish dinner at the time.

On Monday, Berrios stopped by the University of Miami, his alma mater, where he worked out with Wilson. Berrios posted a photo of Wilson, a BYU alum, posing with his hands in the shape of a “U” in front of the Miami school statue.

That same day, Wilson shared an Instagram photo with Berrios, which featured the dynamic duo rocking matching T-shirts.

Wilson’s tee read, “Braxton Berrios is good,” while Berrios’ shirt read, “Zach Wilson is good.” The quarterback also quoted the movie “Step Brothers” in his caption, writing, “Did we just become best friends?”

The Jets finished 4-13 last season in Wilson’s first year at the helm He threw nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions through 13 games.
