New York City restaurants must allow delivery employees to use their bathrooms under a new bill to be introduced to the city council next week.
Around 80,000-odd food couriers in the city spend 12 hours or more per day on e-bikes, usually on Pizza and Pad Thai, but many of the restaurants they serve allow them to use the facilities. They are not ready, they said at a rally to promote the bill on Tuesday.

The group held a march in October for stronger worker safety and greater support from the NYPD – attracting the attention of Rivera and his colleagues, who plan to propose six bills based on the group’s demands.
In addition to the bathroom bill, council members require delivery app companies to enable non-bank payment options, pay workers at least once per week, setting non-negotiable maximum delivery distances to workers Allow – and provide them – insulated delivery bags.
Other bills would force the city to establish minimum per-visit wages and mandate restaurants to let customers know how much employees earn from tips and gratuities on their orders.
According to Maria Figueroa of Cornell University-School of Industrial and Labor Relations, the delivery industry in New York City has boomed since the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic, with one app – UberEats – adding 30,000 new delivery people last year alone.
Figuero said the total number of delivery workers in the city is at least 80,000 from 50,000, down from today.
Rivera said the six bills have the support of Council President Corey Johnson (D-Manhattan).
Delivery workers also face significant threats of violence – most recently on Sunday, when a 29-year-old delivery man was hit by a stray bullet when another man was locked in the grounds of the Brooklyn NYCHA campus.
