The Panthers are in Sam Darnold.
Carolina announced on Friday that he opted for a fifth-year option for the former Jets quarterback, shutting him down during the 2022 season. Darnold is now fully guaranteed to receive $ 23.6 million over the next two years.
To confirm his faith in Darnold, the Panthers traded quarterback Teddy Bridgwater to the Broncos for the 2021 NFL Draft in exchange for a sixth-round pick. And in the first round, the organization opted to select cornerback Jesse Horn with the eighth-overall pick instead of the second signal-caller.
After re-entering three seasons with the Jets, which drafted him third-overall in 2018, Darnold was traded to Carolina earlier this month. The Panthers sent the Jets a sixth-round pick of 2021 as well as a second and fourth-round pick in 2022. Things began to spiral for Darnold, especially under former Jets head coach Adam Gess.

Darnold also suffered multiple injuries during his tenure in New York, including a bout with Mono that boosted his spleen and was ruled out of his 2019 season. He also removed a toenail later that year.
In 2020, Darnold finished with 2,208 passing yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions as the Jets finished 2–14.
